Missions
The postdoctoral position is part of the ALTAMIANTE project, focused on the chemical and biological alteration of asbestos-containing waste (ACW). The researcher will play a key role in the advanced characterization of altered materials using high-resolution electron microscopy techniques, including TEM, Cryo-TEM, EDX, and in-situ TEM.
The candidate will collaborate regularly with external scientists, collaborators, and industry partners interested in high spatial and temporal resolution electron microscopy investigations.
Activities
- Perform analyses using electron microscopy techniques (TEM, SEM, Cryo-TEM, in-situ TEM)
- Conduct biological alteration experiments
- Carry out structural, morphological, and chemical analysis of treated ACW fibers
- Collaborate closely with project partners
- Contribute to the development of physico-chemical degradation models
- Write scientific reports and contribute to publications
Skills
- Expertise in electron microscopy techniques
- Strong background in materials characterization
- Understanding of bacteria–material interactions
- Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team
- Good scientific communication skills (oral and written)
- Autonomy, rigor, and strong organizational skills
Work Context
The position is based at the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Materials of Strasbourg (IPCMS-UMR 7504) CNRS – University of Strasbourg, a recognized center for advanced electron microscopy, more precisely within the "Nanomaterials and Electron Microscopy" team of the "Surfaces and Interfaces" department in the framework of the ANR ALTAMIANTE project and in collaboration with teams specializing in microbiology and chemical treatment of asbestos.
The IPCMS is equipped with the JEOL Grand ARM300 F2 microscope (the only one in France), enabling high-resolution in-situ observations. The TEM platform specializes in imaging under liquid environments, Cryo-TEM, EDX, and related techniques.
The candidate will collaborate regularly with external scientists, collaborators, and industry partners interested in high spatial and temporal resolution electron microscopy investigations.
The position is located in a sector under the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST), and therefore requires, in accordance with the regulations, that your arrival is authorized by the competent authority of the MESR.
Constraints and risks
- Handling of treated asbestos samples under strict safety conditions
- Technical challenges related to CryoTEM usage
- Required training in the use of advanced microscopy equipment
Additional Information
This position is supported by the ANR, which promotes the role of women in science. Women are explicitly encouraged to apply.
