The general objective of this Post-Doc is (i) to better understand the impact of water table level changes on hydrocarbon release mechanisms in the context of climate change (extreme events), (ii) to evaluate and compare the ability of different monitoring methods to characterize the saturation distribution of Light Non Aqueous Phase Liquids (LNAPL) in soils (piezometric vs. geophysical measurements and in situ probes).
The work of the PostDoc is based on a multi-scale approach (scale of laboratory columns and lysimeters) with at the heart, an original experimental device coupling indirect geophysical measurements and in situ physico-chemical measurements (via probes and porous candles) to assess the nature and quantity of LNAPL mobilized (pure, dissolved and gaseous phases). Numerical simulations of multiphase fluxes and contaminant transport should also be performed for comparison with experimental data and identification of the main mechanisms of NAPL release.


The Post-Doc will carry out experiments at the LIEC laboratory, on the organic geochemistry platform of GeoRessources (Faculty of Science and Technology) and on the experimental platform of GISFI (Homécourt) requiring frequent travel (need for a B driving license). Within the framework of congresses / scientific symposiums, the Post-Doc will have to travel outside UL.
Mission 1 : column experimentations:
- The Post-Doc will have to set up and carry out experiments in a laboratory column and in situ (lysimetric column)
- During these experiments, he/she will have to monitor the physico-chemical and geophysical parameters in the soil in the saturated and unsaturated zones and in the zone of the water table fluctuation.
- He/She will have, in collaboration with the BRGM, to ensure the treatment of the geophysical measurements on the profile of the columns
- He/She will have to collect the soil solutions and carry out the analyzes of the contaminants in collaboration with the organic geochemistry platform of GeoRessources
- He/She will have to measure the gases released using field measurement tools (microGC, field GC-MS) connected to gas chambers.
Mission 2 : …. / Modelisation:
- The Post-Doc will have, in collaboration with BRGM and GeoRessources, to carry out numerical simulations of the mechanisms of transfer and dissolution of LNAPLs at different scales
Other associated activities:
-The Post-Doc will have to promote this research project in the form of scientific articles and communications in international congresses.


- Knowledge of organic geochemistry applied to polluted soils,
- Knowledge of hydrogeology and geophysics: flow and transport processes in porous media,
- Experience using commercial simulation software such as Comsol Multiphysics,
- Very good ability to write and transcribe results in English,
- Autonomy in the writing of scientific articles.
- Good knowledge of field monitoring equipment (piezometers, porous candles, probes)
- Experience in the use of laboratory columns

Work Context

The work of the Post-Doc will be carried out mainly at the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Continental Environments which brings together a large part of Lorraine's strengths in environmental physico-chemistry, soil bio-geochemistry and integrative eco-toxicology and puts them at the service of a common objective: "Understanding and modeling highly anthropized continental ecosystems" with a broader vision of ecological and biogeochemical processes from the colloidal scale to that of a watershed.
The PostDoc is part of the BatMobile research project supported as part of the Ademe Gesipol call for projects.
The Post-Doc supervision will be carried out in close collaboration with (i) UMR GeoRessources (expertise in hydrogeology, column experiments, organic geochemistry and modeling of NAPL transfer and dissolution mechanisms at different scales) and (ii) BRGM (expertise in geophysical monitoring (permittivity and resistivity) and multiphase modeling (coupling of hydrogeological and geophysical modeling)).
