Research engineer (M/F) in wireless networks for 5G smart devices (IoT) SLICES-FR

Missions

In the context of the national research infrastructure SLICES-FR and the PEPR Cloud, the Inetlab platform of the ICube laboratory is looking for a research engineer (M/F) specialized in smart devices using 5G cellular networks. He/she will participate in the national SLICES-FR project (PoC, prototyping, integration, documentation, knowledge transfer) taking into account the needs expressed by the community of researchers and supervisory board of SLICES-FR.
In the operation phase of the nodes in production, the engineer will follow the maintenance and software evolution of the code. As part of the periodic reup of the equipment, the engineer will propose different hardware iterations to ensure the evolution of the functionalities and the corrections of any bugs related to the design.

Activity

Main activities
- Development and prototyping of a remote programmable IoT node supporting reference technologies for cellular networks (LTE-M, 5G)
- Development and prototyping of a BY5G, 6G (LXC, Kubernetes) cellular core infrastructure service
- Transition to production of prototypes (acquisition of equipment, deployment, commissioning, writing of documentation support, user support)
- Development of services for remote access to services developed on the platform (firmware flash, isolation, etc.)

Secondary activities
- Development and prototyping of a programmable switch/router node

Your Profil

Skills

Knowledge

- Good knowledge of protocols and the architecture of cellular networks
o 5G Core (OpenAirInterface/Open5GIS)
o 5G RAN
- Solid knowledge and experience in software development:
o Mastery of at least 1 compiled programming language (C/C++, RUST, etc.)
o Mastery of at least 1 interpreted programming language (Bash, Python, etc.)
- Good development practices (Git version manager, Gitlab/Github project management, continuous integration, tests, etc.)
- Very good command of English to exchange with the team and researchers
- Good skills in administration of GNU/Linux, Ubuntu and Debian systems in particular
- Notions of modeling, hardware prototyping and/or Software
- Notions in virtualization (KVM, Docker, LXC)
- Notions in network administration (IPv4/IPv6 routing, filtering, etc.)

Know-how
- Concepts of container orchestration platform administration (ex: Kubernetes)
- SDR (Software Defined Radio) programming concepts
- Ability to propose and carry out reference implementations, prototypes and demonstrators: autonomy, creativity, proactive monitoring, listening to needs

Your Work Environment

The ICube laboratory is composed of 17 teams divided into 4 departments according to the fundamental disciplines of the laboratory (computer science, imaging and robotics, electronics and photonics, mechanics). ICube has 7 leading technological platforms in imaging and medical robotics, Internet of Things, remote sensing, photovoltaic materials, bioinformatics, biomechanics and water treatment.

The engineer will be attached to the Inetlab platform. The Inetlab platform of the ICube laboratory located on the Illkirch campus provides a set of services for conducting experiments related to new Internet technologies. Inetlab maintains a very large-scale infrastructure to experiment with new protocols related to new Internet technologies. It is directed by a technical manager and managed by a scientific manager assisted by the scientific council of the platform.

The platform's equipment and services are based on technical expertise in computer networks, in particular the design of connected objects, the programming of embedded systems and network protocols, the design of network infrastructure, energy and radio instrumentation.

Inetlab is a structure composed of a team of 6 engineers spread over 4 poles of expertise: Design and deployment of new generation networks, Systems and network administration, Data, Design of connected objects. The engineer will be under the hierarchical responsibility of the technical manager of the InetLab platform. It will be integrated into the New Generation Network Design and Deployment and Connected Object Design poles.

Constraints and risks

The recruited engineer will occasionally travel to France to participate in the meetings of the SLICES-FR research infrastructure and present the work done to the national technical team.
