Job Description

Missions

Researcher for the development of the analysis pipeline for the CTA Observatory

Activity

The successful applicant will work on the reconstruction pipeline (dataPipe) of the Data Processing and Preservation System (DPPS) of the CTA observatory. In particular, the work will be inscribed in the development of the data workflow that spans from the reconstructed-air-shower data level (DL2) to the science-ready data level (DL3). The focus will be first on the classification of the events into different “event types” as a function of reconstruction quality and background rejection capability, then on the development of all tools necessary for the production of “event type” dependent Instrument Response Functions. She/he will also participate to the integration and testing activities of the pipeline, applied to simulated data and commissioning real data. This activity will be performed in strong synergy with all other dataPipe developments and in close collaboration with the other teams working in DPPS.
The development will be made in the context of the early science phase of CTA, giving the opportunity to cover science subjects to be discussed with the candidate.

Your Profil

Skills

The candidates should hold a PhD in astroparticle and a deep knowledge of dataPipe with a strong motivation in algorithm and software development. She/he should have knowledge in formal code release and documentation and a good understanding of experimental data analysis. The software will be written in Python.
The position is available from January 2027 for a duration of 1 year.

Your Work Environment

The CPPM (Centre de Physique des Particules de Marseille) is a laboratory of the IN2P3 (Institut National de Physique Nucléaire et de Physique des Particules) of the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), located on the campus of Luminy in Marseille (France). The activities of CPPM are centered on particle physics, astroparticle physics and cosmology. CPPM offers a strong environment in the field of astroparticle physics, being involved both in current (H.E.S.S., ANTARES) and upcoming (CTA, KM3NeT) projects.
The gamma-ray astrophysics group of CPPM participates since several years to the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), a project to build the next generation ground-based very high energy gamma-ray observatory. The group is responsible in CTA for the data acquisition software (Event Builder) of the NectarCAM and LST-CAM cameras for the medium-sized and for the large-sized telescope, respectively. It is also coordinating the offline camera calibration for the first LST telescope, presently in commissioning at the La Palma site, and Monte Carlo simulation activity in NectarCAM. Furthermore, the group works in the preparatory studies for the research of galactic PeVatrons with CTA and is leading the observational proposal with the first LST telescope of the measurement of a promising PeVatron candidate.
