The realization of memory devices is in perpetual development in the microelectronics industry. In particular, phase change materials are booming because they provide a very high stability of the stored information and a very simplified miniaturization process compared to current memories. The characterization of these materials at the nanometer scale is becoming a crucial issue for the development of these devices.
The latest generation of focused ion beams (FIB) from the company Orsay Physics is capable of reaching a lateral resolution of 2.5 nm and coupled with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer this allows to understand the manufacturing process and to analyze the aging and failure characteristics of memory devices. The main objectives of this research work are to evaluate the capabilities of the NanoSIMS to study and analyze the new generation of phase change memory characteristics developed by STMircoelectronics. A large part of this work will be carried out on the site of Orsay Physics, the company developing this instrument. The aim will be to characterize at the atomic scale the composition and crystallinity of the grains (line and depth profiles). We will also determine the segregation at grain interfaces after the programming cycles. Calibration of nano-SIMS analyses will be obtained on thin films (whole sheet, TEM lamellae and integrated memory matrix) using well-controlled techniques (TEM and associated analyses, XPS, LEED).
- Good knowledge and appetence for scientific instrumentation (acquisition chain, detection, vacuum...)
- Good knowledge of FIB, SEM, EDX, SIMS, TOF-SIMS technologies, sample preparation, spectroscopy techniques
- Good knowledge of SIMS and TOF-SIMS would be a plus.

The Institut Matériaux, Microélectronique et Nanosciences de Provence (IM2NP - UMR7334) is a large multidisciplinary research unit of about 300 people at the interface of physics, chemistry and microelectronics. In particular, the researcher will be assigned to the NOVA team specializing in the nanostructuring of semiconductor materials. For this project, the NOVA team is working very closely with the Orsay Physics company based in Fuveau. The recruited researcher will be required to carry out numerous missions in this company.
