Missions
The ERC project DISPERSAL aims at studying and modeling past mammalian dispersals, using as a type-example the dispersal of rodents and primates from Asia to South America 40 to 35 million years ago. We hire a paleomagnetist/paleogeographer to reconstruct a set of paleogeographic maps associated with these dispersal events, as well as to participate to the magnetostratigraphic dating of fossil sites.
Activités
The postdoc will refine existing paleogeographic maps with Gplates software adding recent high-resolution orogen reconstructions constraints from the eastern Mediterranean and Southeast Asian regions. The reconstructions will focus on two end-member scenarios within current uncertainties: the maximum and minimum archipelago density within reasonable geological and plate kinematic limits, and the maximum and minimum width and depth of the Neotethys ocean. The postdoc will also target new paleomagnetic datasets from well-dated Eocene sites in stable plate interiors to better refine the paleomagnetically determined position of the global plate reconstruction relative to the Earth's spin axis.
In addition to the paleogeographic work, paleomagnetic approaches will be used to refine the dating of fossil vertebrate and paleoclimatic sites of interest via magnetostratigraphy. The postdoc will acquire paleomagnetic samples on currently poorly dated sites in Anatolia and other sites to be determined; paleomagnetic samples will be analyzed at CEREGE to determine their magnetic polarity and correlated to the geomagnetic polarity time scale.
