Missions

Monitoring the seasonal evolution of the triple oxygen isotope composition of water and water vapor at the soil-plant-atmosphere interface.
We are seeking a postdoctoral research scientist to join an ANR (French National Research Agency) supported project entitled “Past dynamic of continental atmospheric humidity and vegetation: new insights from the triple isotope composition of oxygen” (https://www.cerege.fr/fr/2017-anr-humi-17). The successful candidate will examine, under natural conditions, the seasonal evolution of the triple oxygen isotope compositions of the water pools at the soil-plant-atmosphere interface. The monitoring will give some clues for i) tracing evaporation vs transpiration contribution to the atmospheric water vapor, and ii) calibrating the relationship between the triple oxygen isotope compositions of plant silica, derived from plant water, and the atmospheric relative humidity, for the development of a proxy of past relative humidity.

Activities

The successful candidate will be based at CEREGE, a place of strong interdisciplinarity in Earth Sciences, and belong to the Climate group (https://www.cerege.fr/en/research/climate-research-group). The monitoring will take place at the experimental oak forest observatory (O3HP) located in the French Mediterranean area of the Luberon (https://o3hp.obs-hp.fr/index.php/en). Rainfall, soil water, plant water, plant silica and atmospheric water vapor will be sampled and analyzed in mass spectrometry and laser spectroscopy on site and at the laboratory. The data will be compared to results recently obtained in closed microcosms.

Skills

We are looking for a motivated and creative candidate with a PhD in earth sciences for less than 2 years, ecology or plant physiology and a background in oxygen stable isotope geochemistry. Previous experience with the triple oxygen isotope system is highly desirable. Fluent English and strong collaborative spirit are required.

Work Context

The CEREGE (Centre Européen de Recherche et d'Enseignement en Géosciences de l'Environnement) is located on the Plateau de l'Arbois in Aix en Provence (France) (https://www.cerege.fr/fr). The researcher will be part of the CLIMATS team and will have at her/his disposal the analytical means of the PANISS platform (Platform for Analysis of Stable Isotopes). The successful candidate will closely collaborate with scientists from CEREGE, O3HP (https://o3hp.obs-hp.fr) and ECOTRON (http://www.ecotron.cnrs.fr) and will participate to the project meetings gathering several research groups from France and a group from Canada.

Constraints and risks

Several stays of 2-3 weeks at the observatory (remote site), to sample and analyze the water vapor by laser spectrometry, are planed. A driving license is necessary.
