Job Description
Missions
Investigate the thermochemical and geodynamic evolution of the lunar interior.
Determine under what conditions the Moon's current structure might have formed and been maintained over geological timescales exceeding 4 billion years.
Activity
The project will aim to investigate how significant contrasts in density and viscosity, as well as the observed asymmetry of the basal mantle layer, can persist despite mantle convection. The evolutionary scenarios obtained will also be tested against independent observational constraints, notably the history of the lunar magnetic field and that of volcanism. The project will build on the mineral physics research carried out by the lead team on the mineral phases of the deep mantle, in order to investigate how the mineralogical and thermal conditions resulting from mantle inversion evolve and may lead to the formation of mantle structures consistent with observational constraints.
The successful candidate will apply these conditions in numerical geodynamic simulations using the StagYY software (Tackley, 2008). The aim will be to identify models capable of reproducing the current geometry and physical properties of the lunar interior.
Your Profil
Skills
* a background in petrology and geodynamics, * a keen interest in numerical modelling and data analysis, * experience in geodynamic simulations, mantle convection or high-performance computing would be an advantage.
Your Work Environment
Postdoctoral position as part of the ANR-X-MAT project. The postdoctoral researcher will be based at the Géoazur laboratory, a joint research unit affiliated with the CNRS, Université Côte d'Azur, the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur and the IRD. The laboratory has a staff of around 200 and carries out leading-edge research in seismology, marine geophysics, geophysical imaging and environmental observation. The laboratory is situated in the Sophia Antipolis technology park, in the immediate vicinity of Nice.
Constraints and risks
research-related travel associated with the project, attendance at conferences and visits to partner laboratories
