Missions

The position is based at CNRS-ISTO (Institut des Sciences de la Terre d'Orléans) within the MADMAX team, dedicated among other topics to the study of magmatic and volcanic processes.
The recruited person will work under the supervision of Bruno Scaillet, PI of the ANR REGASMAGMA project (2025–2030), which will fund both the laboratory activities and the salary of the research engineer.
The project aims to determine the quantity of volatiles present in magmas prior to eruption in order to better evaluate the environmental impact of major past explosive eruptions, using a combination of analytical and experimental approaches.

Activités

• Analysis of volatiles in the matrix glasses of volcanic rocks (pumices) and in occluded porosity, using volatile extraction/analysis techniques:
o Point analyses: SIMS, EPMA, SEM, FTIR
o Bulk analyses: crushing/fusion followed by mass spectrometry
• Synthesis of volatile-bearing glass standards using hydrothermal methods.

Compétences

General / Theoretical / Disciplinary Knowledge
• Strong background in volcanic geology
• Knowledge of analytical techniques for geological materials, especially volcanic rocks (EPMA, FTIR, SEM, SIMS)
• Experience in experimental petrology
• Ideally, skills in mass spectrometry
• Good command of English (level B2)
• Strong motivation for teamwork
• Strong writing skills
Operational Know-How
• Ability to establish a diagnosis
• Problem-solving skills
• Apply quality assurance procedures
• Apply health and safety regulations

Contexte de travail

The work will take place at ISTO (Institut des Sciences de la Terre d'Orléans), a joint research unit between CNRS, the University of Orléans, and BRGM. ISTO covers a broad spectrum of activities, from surface geology to the study of deep Earth processes (volcanism, rock deformation, etc.).
ISTO hosts most of the analytical facilities required for the project. Depending on needs and opportunities, the recruited person may benefit from specific training to become familiar with the techniques, methods, and tools used in the laboratory.

Contraintes et risques

The position involves short missions in France (for SIMS analyses) and abroad, for sample collection if necessary, and for presenting results to project partners outside Orléans (e.g., Florence, Cambridge).
The position is carried out in compliance with standard health and safety regulations for research laboratories (chemicals, lasers, electricity, high pressures, etc.).
