Missions

At CNRS, the ISTO laboratory– Institut des Sciences de la Terre d'Orléans – in the frame of its research interests on ore processes, developed with the BRGM EPIC and its partners (University of Porto, University of Castilla-La Mancha, Antea Group) the project ERA-MIN2 AUREOLE [tArgeting eU cRitical mEtals (Sb, W) and predictibility of Sb-As-Hg envirOnmentaL issuEs.
This project is devoted to the development of a large scale metallogenic model of antimony mineralisations and related metals, with the aim of improving prospectivity and exploration of these critical metals for Europe. Large scale prospectivity will also be employed to assess the probability of the occurrence of the heavy metals in the environment, at the scale of the French and Spanish variscan basement.
The post-doc will be integrated at the ISTO in the “Métallogénie” Team and in the AUREOLE project within the WP1 « Geological processes that control the location and characteristics of mineralisation », coordinated by A. Lima (University of Porto). The post-doc project will contribute to the AUREOLE Task 1.2 « Evaluation of mafic and sedimentary rocks as metal source ». The aim of this task is to determine if the enrichment in antimony and related metals in the hydrothermal fluids is due to i) metal enrichment in primary magmas and/or ii) an efficient extraction of metals during high-temperature magmatic degassing, and/or iii) the hydrothermal leaching of mafic intrusive rocks and their host rocks by hydrothermal fluids.
The fellow will therefore interact with the researchers involved in this Task.

Activities

The researcher, in collaboration with AUREOLE coordinator, WP leaders, the ISTO responsible, and the other partners of the project, will be in charge of :
- synthesising the literature data on Sb-As-W-Hg-Au abundances in mafic and sedimentary rocks and the carrier minerals of these elements;
- identifying the carrier minerals of Sb, W and Hg in a few specific examples, and experimentally constrain the chemical reactions that occurred during the hydrothermal processes at the origin of the metal enrichment;
- performing mass balance calculations to evaluate the amounts of elements (Sb, W and Hg) mobilised by the hydrothermal processes, in agreement with the variations observed between hydrothermally altered and unaltered hosting rocks;
- publishing all or part of the obtained results in the form of a scientific paper and/or a congress communication.

Skills

A PhD in Earth Sciences and expertise in ore processes and gitology, in particular of hydrothermal and magmatic systems are required. This expertise have to be attested by at least one publication as first or second author on the themes and the activities of the project.
Mineral characterisation (SEM, electron microprobe, LA-ICP-MS), and mass balance skills are essential for the accomplishment of this post-doc. Experimental expertise is also appreciated.
The candidate has to be used to teamwork and to collaborate with researchers of different domains in geosciences.

An excellent editorial quality is required to write scientific papers and publish the obtained results within the given time.
English expertise is required with a B1 to B2 level.

Work Context

The fellow will be under the hierarchic responsibility of the coordinator of the AUREOLE project at ISTO laboratory. The researcher will interact with the partners of the project and join the “Metallogenie” Team. He/she will benefit of a work environment including experimental and analytical facilities, and funding from the ERA-MIN2 AUREOLE project and the “Métallogénie” Team.
