Missions

The objective of the mission is to establish the link between physico-chemical structure and optical properties of coastal (Mediterranean, Atlantic) atmospheric aerosols.

Activities

The main activity will consist of studying samples of atmospheric aerosols - from Porquerolles island (Mediterranean Sea) and Le Croisic (Atlantic Ocean) – by scanning and transmission electron microscopies. It aims at counting, measuring sizes, characterizing 3D morphologies of the different classes of collected aerosols as well as determining their elemental chemical composition. Other experimental methods will also be implemented: vibrational spectro-microscopies (Raman, infrared), XPS, XRD, etc. The objective of these analyses is to determine which model of aerosol-light interaction is most relevant to account for atmospheric aerosol optical properties in the coastal zone.

Skills

PhD in condensed matter: materials science, nano-sciences, mineralogy, physics, physical chemistry, optics, etc…
Previous experience in the use of electron microscopes, as well as mastery of the physical bases of light scattering and absorption by aerosols are sought, but not absolutely necessary.

Work Context

The CINaM is located on the Luminy campus, in the 9th arrondissement of Marseille, close to the Parc National des Calanques. The person recruited will join the "Nanomaterials and Environment" team of the CINaM. This position is funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), in partnership with the Defense Innovation Agency (AID), ASTRID program.

Constraints and risks

Due to the rules imposed by this program, only applications from citizens of the European Union are eligible. The experience at the date of employment is a maximum of 2 years after the thesis (the date of 1/10/2020 can be modified).
