Missions

The postdoctoral researcher position for 2 years is at the heart of the interdisciplinary project ENERGON "Energy transitions and reconfigurations of socio-ecosystems: mobilizing the OHMs (OBSERVATOIRES HOMMES-MILIEUX / HUMAN ENVIRONMENT OBSERVATORIES) to produce an integrated methodology", selected in the framework of the call for project TRANSVERSE PROGRAMMING OF THE LABEX DRIIHM (DEVICE FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH ON HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS) 2021-2024.
Work on the localized impact of the energy transition is mostly sectoral and monographic in nature. The challenge of the ENERGON project, at the heart of the OHMs, is to go beyond this compartmentalization, by crossing the social, technical and environmental dimensions specific to each socio-ecosystem. The idea of a "Society-Technology-Environment" nexus will be put to the test by considering the OHMs as "laboratories" for assessing the impact of the energy transition on these three components. An integrated methodology will be used to characterize the reconfiguration of socio-ecosystems and the human/environment interactions at work in this context. The team of six "test" OHMs is broadly interdisciplinary and has the necessary skills to understand the trajectories of these reconfigurations.
The ENERGON project brings together six OHMs, including four in France: Bassin Minier de Provence; Fessenheim; Pays de Biche; and Vallée du Rhône, and two in North America: Nunavik (Canada) and Pima County (Arizona). It brings together 23 researchers and teacher-researchers from three major interdisciplinary groups: social sciences (14), environmental sciences (5) and science and technology (4); the team represents some 15 scientific structures.
The position will be attached to the UMR Telemme 7303, a laboratory which is located in the Maison Méditerranéenne des Sciences de l'Homme (MMSH), in Aix-en-Provence. The UMR Telemme participates in the activity of the OHMs network, in particular in the OHM-Bassin Minier de Provence. Sylvie Daviet Professor of Geography, member of the UMR Telemme, is in charge of the ENERGON project.

Activities

The postdoctoral fellow will be recruited at the beginning of the project and for a period of 2 years; his/her mission will be twofold:
- On the one hand, he/she will ensure the coordination of the project in a transversal way to the different OHMs; he/she will ensure the keeping of the program calendar; the reporting of meetings; the implementation and management of the project database, in connection with the databases of the different OHMs; he/she will ensure the preparation of the organization of scientific events and the modalities of dissemination of the research results, in accordance with the vocation of the OHMs in terms of science/society interface.
- On the other hand, he/she will participate fully in the research project, in its design, in the definition of the bibliographic base, in the elaboration of field surveys and in the production of research results to bring out the reconfigurative effects of energy transitions. He/she will therefore have the opportunity to publish and to participate in collective publications. Naturally, his/her personal contribution to research will depend on his/her disciplinary background.

Skills

The profile of the post-doc will be sought in particular in the field of environmental or social sciences: for example, a sociologist/politician/geographer profile who has completed a thesis on socio-ecosystems or on the energy transition will have simultaneously addressed two of the parameters of our Society/Technology/Environment triptych. Because of the context, he/she should have experience in interdisciplinary research, qualities of adaptation to different fields and a scientific background on energy issues. On the conceptual level, mastery of the terminology of the OHM device is expected. In view of the different missions mentioned, the person recruited must have organizational skills, be comfortable managing databases and disseminating research results (blog, specific media for field actors and civil society).

Work Context

As a reminder, the LabEx DRIIHM (DEVICE FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH ON HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS), gathers the Human-Environment Observatories (OHMs) which are 13 in number, and which are tools created and carried by the INEE (NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR ECOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENT) within the CNRS. The Human Environment Observatory Bassin Minier de Provence was even the first OHM created; the closure of the mine in 2003 being considered as the 'DISRUPTING EVENT' for the transformation of the local socio-ecosystem.
TELEMMe - TEMPS, ESPACES, LANGAGES, EUROPE MÉRIDIONALE, MÉDITERRANÉE - is a joint research unit of the University of Aix-Marseille and the CNRS, composed of historians, hispanists and geographers. In terms of the number of researchers and doctoral students, it is the most important laboratory at the MMSH. The Maison méditerranéenne des sciences de l'homme (MMSH) is a component of Aix-Marseille University. It is a member of the "National Network of Human Science Centers" Scientific Interest Group (GIS - RNMSH), which includes 11 mixed units and the Doctoral School 355 "Spaces, Cultures, and Societies". It supports the scientific activities of its associated units by making shared equipment and tools available. Aix-Marseille University (AMU) has five large campuses across the metropolitan area that meet international standards. Its A*Midex University Foundation, which is the bearer of the IDEX (EXCELLENCE INITIATIVE), contributes to the development of an interdisciplinary teaching and research cluster described as an "INTENSIVE RESEARCH UNIVERSITY”.
It is in this working environment and in interaction with the other OHMs of the program that the postdoc's activity will develop. The work program consists of 6 clearly identified steps and has a current budget of 89 000€ over three years (except human resources).

Constraints and risks

As part of his/her research and program coordination missions, the person recruited will carry out missions and field visits potentially on the six OHMs concerned by the ENERGON program, in order to ensure the comparability of the data produced.
