Job Description
Missions
In the team "Local Translation in Axon Regeneration", we investigate the molecular mechanisms that underlie the regenerative capacity of injured neurons. Our research focuses on gene regulation processes, particularly the translational control of mRNAs into proteins — an essential step for effective regeneration (Schaeffer et al., Neuron, 2023). A key aspect of our work is to understand how neurons regulate gene expression locally within axons through local ribosome supply and mRNA translation. The successful candidate will establish live imaging tools to analyse translation dynamics in regenerating axons, using an ex vivo culture model previously optimized (Schaeffer et al., Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2020).
12-month contract with possibility of renewal
Activity
• Set up retina explant cultures with different regenerative capacities in microfluidic chambers, based on published protocoles
• Develop and validate live-cell imaging tools to track translation dynamics
• Perform real-time imaging in regenerating axons
• Study the role of specific factors in translation dynamics in regenerating axons
Your Profil
Skills
• PhD in Neurobiology, in Developmental Biology or in Cell and Molecular Biology (ideally <2 years – junior post-doc level)
• Solid background and strong interest in biology of the neuron, gene regulation, translation regulation, axon regeneration and/or axonal trafficking
• Hands-on experience in cell culture, microscopy and/or image analysis
• Strong team spirit, along with the ability to work independently and manage time and resources effectively
• High level of scientific curiosity, with a drive to contribute to interdisciplinary research projects
• Demonstrated scientific rigor and organizational skills
• Excellent communication skills (proficiency in English is essential)
• Licence to perform animal experimentation is a plus
Your Work Environment
The IBDM, located on the Luminy Campus, comprises approximately 220 members, including permanent researchers, faculty-researchers, engineers, and technicians, as well as non-permanent staff such as contract employees, postdocs, doctoral students, and interns. These individuals are organized into 22 research teams and 11 technical platforms and services.
IBDM is a joint research unit under the joint supervision of CNRS and Aix-Marseille Université, focusing on developmental biology and associated pathologies.
The activity will take place within the team "Local Translation in Axon Regeneration" led by Julia SCHAEFFER.
As the laboratory includes members from various nationalities, proficiency in English is essential.
