Job Description
Missions
As part of the OXY3C project, supported by the French national research programme SPLEEN, the postdoctoral researcher will carry out kinetic modelling of natural gas combustion under oxy-combustion conditions, building on experimental results obtained through two doctoral projects that are nearing completion.
The objective is to assess, validate and improve existing chemical kinetic mechanisms to better describe chemical reactivity and product formation in a jet-stirred reactor (JSR) and in premixed flames. This work will contribute to improving the fundamental knowledge required to develop energy-efficient industrial combustion processes and CO₂ capture technologies.
Activity
- Conduct a literature review of chemical kinetic mechanisms for natural gas combustion and compare the models available in the literature.
- Analyse quantitative experimental data obtained in a jet-stirred reactor and from premixed flames.
- Assess the predictive capabilities of existing kinetic mechanisms and identify their limitations based on comparisons with experimental data.
- Analyse reaction pathways and kinetic parameters to identify the reactions and parameters that influence simulation results.
- Adapt and improve chemical kinetic mechanisms based on kinetic analysis, experimental data and information available in the literature.
- Perform numerical simulations and compare the results with experimental observations.
- Disseminate the scientific results through research publications and presentations at national and international conferences.
Your Profil
Skills
- Knowledge of chemical kinetics and combustion, particularly the modelling of gas-phase reaction mechanisms.
- Skills in kinetic modelling and numerical simulation of reactive systems.
- Proficiency in chemical kinetics simulation tools, particularly CHEMKIN or equivalent software.
- Ability to analyse and interpret experimental data and compare simulation results with quantitative measurements.
- Ability to critically review the scientific literature, identify model limitations and propose improvements.
- Proficiency in scientific English, both written and spoken.
- Strong scientific writing skills and the ability to present research findings.
- Scientific rigour, autonomy and the ability to work collaboratively within a research team.
Your Work Environment
The Laboratory of Reaction and Process Engineering (LRGP, UMR 7274) is a joint research unit of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the University of Lorraine, established on 1 January 2010 and based in Nancy, France. Its overarching scientific objective is to study processes in their entirety and complexity. The LRGP develops the scientific and technological knowledge required to design, investigate, operate and optimise complex processes involving the physicochemical and biological transformation of matter and energy. The laboratory comprises more than 300 people, including nearly 20 CNRS researchers, 80 university faculty members and researchers, 45 technical and administrative staff, and 180 non-permanent staff, including contract researchers, 85 PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and master's students.
This research project will be carried out within the CiTherE research group, which brings together specialists in chemical kinetics, thermodynamics and chemical reaction engineering. Its research focuses primarily on energy, with the aim of developing energy systems that are more efficient, more economical and more environmentally friendly, through an approach combining physical chemistry and process engineering. The experimental and theoretical research conducted within this group provides an original approach that bridges the understanding and modelling of phenomena at the molecular scale with their behaviour at the reactor and process scales.
The successful candidate will join the radical kinetics group, which has extensive experience in the kinetics of pyrolysis, oxidation and combustion reactions. Its research covers a range of topics, including oil formation and processing, combustion in engines and burners, pollutant formation, and the thermal destruction of toxic chemicals.
This position falls within a sector subject to the French Protection of Scientific and Technical Potential (PPST) regulations. Accordingly, in compliance with applicable regulations, the appointment is subject to prior authorisation by the competent authority of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR).
