Job Description

Missions

As part of its research activities within the I3S laboratory, the Kairos team is developing an experimental platform dedicated to Industry 4.0, based on the Training Factory Industry 4.0 24V solution. As part of this project, we are looking for a Research Engineer to design, develop, and validate the software layer of the platform, from real-time control of industrial equipment to high-level software services.
The platform is primarily controlled by Controllino programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and integrates various communicating devices and equipment.
The objective of the position is to contribute to the implementation of a software architecture that enables the reliable, modular, and secure control, supervision, and experimentation of the different components of the platform.

Activity

Under the supervision of the project team, your responsibilities will include:
- Defining the software architecture of the platform and its various components;
- Developing and testing embedded software, particularly drivers for controlling the different pieces of equipment;
- Implementing industrial communication protocols between the various components of the platform;
- Developing and validating an API Gateway to provide secure access to the interfaces and services exposed by the platform;
- Developing and integrating microservices to enable the execution of high-level missions and behaviors;
- Integrating and validating the various software components on the physical platform;
- Contributing to the diagnosis, debugging, and resolution of issues encountered during integration and experimentation phases;
- Writing the technical documentation required for the maintenance and future evolution of the platform.

Your Profil

Skills

You hold a Master's degree (or equivalent, Bac+5) in Computer Science, Embedded Systems, Automation, Industrial Networks, or a related field. You have strong skills in C programming and embedded and real-time software development. You are comfortable working in industrial environments and are able to understand the operation of low-voltage electrical installations and interpret electrical schematics.
You are also interested in challenges at the intersection of embedded software, industrial automation, networking, and distributed systems.

Essential technical skills:
- Low-level C programming on microcontrollers, particularly STM32;
- Real-time application development and experience with RTOSs;
- PLC programming / Industrial Programmable Logic Controllers;
- Communication protocols: TCP/IP, UDP, Modbus RTU/TCP, RS-232, RS-485;
- Messaging protocols, particularly MQTT;
- REST API development;
- Python for developing tools and services;
- Experience with Linux environments and Git.

The following skills and experience would be an advantage:
- Experience developing applications for Controllino PLCs;
- Experience with STM32 and FreeRTOS or Zephyr environments;
- Containerization with Docker;
- JavaScript / Node.js development;
- Implementation of authentication, encryption, and API security mechanisms;
- Knowledge of microservices architectures;
- Experience with Behavior Tree programming, particularly with Groot2 or PyTree;
- Experience integrating, commissioning, and troubleshooting industrial systems.

Your Work Environment

The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) is a public research organization under the authority of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research. It conducts research across all scientific disciplines and contributes to the advancement of knowledge and its transfer to society and the socio-economic world.
The position is offered as part of the research activities conducted within the I3S laboratory, a joint research unit of the CNRS and Université Côte d'Azur. Located on the French Riviera, the laboratory brings together researchers and faculty members working on a wide range of topics, from artificial intelligence and data science to distributed systems, embedded systems, and software engineering. The laboratory conducts both fundamental and applied research activities, in collaboration with academic and industrial partners.
The successful Research Engineer will join a multidisciplinary research team and will contribute directly to the design, development, and validation of the experimental platform, working closely with the researchers and postdoctoral researchers involved in the project.
