Job Description
Missions
We propose using label-free quantitative phase imaging to observe the behavior of Lasius niger ants in real time and without disturbance. This approach will enable direct, high-speed visualization of individual, inter-individual, and collective behaviors—such as pheromone deposition and tracking—without altering the subjects. The focus will be on food source retrieval contexts. By correlating physical observations with behavioral dynamics, this non-invasive method will provide an unprecedented empirical basis for studying social and chemical interactions in these insects.
The candidate (M/F) will be responsible for conducting innovative research to advance the state of the art in this field. They will design and carry out experiments on ant colonies to investigate their individual and collective behaviors.
Activity
- Maintain and manage colonies of Lasius niger ants.
- Design and execute experimental plans to observe behavioral and chemical dynamics.
- Develop video signal processing tools for automated tracking of individuals.
- Create models to analyze social interactions and pheromone deposition.
- Program (R, Python/Matlab, LabView) to automate data acquisition and analysis.
- Organize and document results for publications and presentations.
