Job Description
Missions
As part of the OPALE collaborative project – 'Obturateurs et panneaux rayonnants reconfigurables' – between the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) and the AID (gence Française d'Innovation et de Défense), French academic research laboratories (CEA LETI, ICMCB, IETR, Telecom Paris and XLIM) are joining forces to propose innovative architectures for reconfigurable devices (attenuators/shutters, low-profile and highly directional antennas) with a view to surpassing the current state of the art. The successful candidate will be responsible for modelling and optimising the number of control elements in a multi-channel antenna system, with a view to assessing the potential for minimising the energy consumption of such systems.
Activity
As part of the OPALE project, a 12-month post (with the possibility of extension) is available for postdoctoral research into strategies for feeding array-type directional antennas. More specifically, the aim is to assess the feasibility of under-feeding these antennas by strategically selecting the position and weights to be applied to radiating elements in several antenna architectures developed as part of the project. This study will require the development of optimisation methods, which may draw on various state-of-the-art works and may employ strategies such as neural networks or 'physics-informed neural networks'. Beyond the radiating panel aspect alone, the study must consider the impact of feeding choices on any potential active chains that may be connected upstream.
Your Profil
Skills
Your Work Environment
The main objective is to define a method for calculating the electromagnetic performance of an antenna, whilst reducing the number of excitation channels required. Among the possible options, quantification of phase states is considered as a minimum, but the focus should instead be on a strategy to reduce the number of channels, in order to evaluate the following characteristics: gain as a function of the antenna's radiating area, active reflection coefficient, and isolation level between channels. The study will initially be carried out on conventional array models to define reference cases, and will then be applied to two antenna architectures developed within the OPALE project. The results obtained should help the consortium to define the most suitable design for each type of antenna, in collaboration with the various teams. The research work will cover the following stages:
- Research into the state of the art regarding methods for thinning out directive arrays and defining their limits of application;
- Conducting an initial analysis on reference arrays, using algorithms to be selected and applied to the study;
- Development of optimisation methods to adapt them to the project's antennas and their specific characteristics;
- Prospective study on the impact of reducing the number of controls on system aspects that affect performance (taking into account a specific EIRP or G/T level);
- Drafting of summary documents and dissemination of the results.
