Description of the activity :
TITLE: Lensless endoscopy is a research field that aims at developing a miniature endoscope whose distal diameter is limited by the size of the optical fiber (~300 microns). This technology has been developed at the Fresnel Institute (Marseille - France) since 2013 and uses a wavefront modulator that is able to control the phase of the light injected into each of the single mode cores of a multi-core fiber. This makes it possible to focus the light at the end of the fiber and scan a sample to obtain an image while no optics are present at the end of the fiber. Such an endoscope has applications in the field of neuroscience to study the activity of neurons in deep areas (>1mm) of the brain, areas that are not accessible by any other imaging tool.
The goal of the research program is (1) to further develop the lens-free endoscope(2) to apply the technology to the study of deep brain activity in the awake mouse.


The activity will concern the development of the lensless endoscope from experimental and computational sides. It will consist in conducting wavefront control experiments to realize 2photon fluorescence images using special multi-core fibers (tapered fibers, twisted fibers...) and to develop algorithms to process and optimize the images.
We will also seek to implement the lensless endoscope in awake mouse brains to image neuron activity in deep brain areas.
