Missions

The selected candidate will join a research project focusing on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a major opportunistic pathogen particularly known for its intrinsic resistance to antibiotics. The aim of the project is to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms of iron homeostasis in this bacterium, a process that is essential for its survival and virulence.
This work is part of a project funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) and combines approaches in microbiology, molecular biology, and fluorescence microscopy imaging. The candidate will be responsible for designing and conducting experiments—particularly on biofilms formed by this pathogen—analyzing results independently, and contributing to their interpretation and dissemination.

Activités

Main activities:
Conduct bacterial culture experiments
Analyze biofilms using confocal microscopy
Analyze microscopy images
Design molecular biology strategies (generate gene mutations, construct fluorescent reporters)
Process experimental results and present them effectively
Work collaboratively within a team
Secondary activities:
Participate with other team members in the functional management of the laboratory (ordering consumables, maintaining the Level 2 laboratory)

Compétences

Prior experience in microbiology and molecular biology is essential. The candidate will need to have strong skills in bacterial culture techniques, with particular emphasis on biofilm cultures. Expertise in qRT-PCR, gene deletion strain construction, and development of fluorescent reporter strains will be highly valued. Proficiency in fluorescence microscopy techniques, especially the use of confocal microscopy, will be a significant advantage. Skills in scientific image analysis (for example, using ImageJ software) are also desirable.
The position requires a good command of English, both written and spoken, for reading scientific literature, writing reports, and drafting articles.
Finally, the candidate is expected to have the ability to work effectively in a team, possess strong organizational skills, work autonomously, and regularly report on the progress of their experiments.

Contexte de travail

The candidate will work in the Metals and Microorganisms: Biology, Chemistry and Applications team within UMR7242, located at the Research Institute of the Strasbourg Graduate School of Biotechnology (ESBS). The biology team's website is: https://bsc.unistra.fr/en/research-teams/team-schalkmislin/presentation/. The team consists of approximately 23 members, including biologists and chemists, promoting an interdisciplinary approach to scientific challenges.
Confocal microscopy analyses will be performed on an imaging platform located at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Strasbourg.
This work is part of a collaborative ANR project involving four partners: three based in Strasbourg and one in Reims, fostering regular and dynamic scientific exchanges within a complementary consortium.
The ESBS site is easily accessible by public transport (tram and bus) and offers university catering on site. The position does not involve on-call duties or shift work.

Contraintes et risques

The candidate will work in a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratory.
