Missions

The postdoctoral position will be framed around understanding the role of public policy in driving Science/Society initiatives, structured around three complementary levels of action: the Île-de-France Region, a comparative national scale, and an international scale centered on North America. In addition to cross-case analysis, the candidate will be tasked with better identifying the levers needed to engage the involvement of local and regional authorities at different levels in these cooperative efforts.

Activity

One strand of work will aim to better document what is unfolding at the level of the Île-de-France Region, on which PC2 of the PEPR TRANSFORM program is particularly focused. The City of Paris has implemented a Research strategy since the previous mandate. For several years, the Île-de-France Region led the PICRI initiative — Partenariat Institutions Citoyens pour la Recherche et l'Innovation (Institutions-Citizens Partnership for Research and Innovation) — and today appears less engaged in supporting these efforts, which will need to be analyzed and weighed against the perspectives of field actors. However, other initiatives have emerged in the Île-de-France Region and contribute to sustaining strong regional dimensions that are rarely funded by the regional institution. The two years of the postdoctoral position should allow for the analysis and valorization of certain illustrative examples (Eco-Citizen Institutes, observatories, etc.). Beyond analyzing the relationships between the city and regional levels in this region, which holds such a specific place in the French research landscape, this postdoc will also aim to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms driving co-research initiatives in connection with local and regional authorities, by offering a panorama of approaches undertaken in other territories. A comparative focus will therefore be expected during the interview, highlighting one or two other regions. Since the Brittany Region has already been extensively covered, we will expect shortlisted candidates to propose alternatives involving other regions (e.g., Normandy, Occitanie in particular), and an international opening would be especially interesting to propose in this respect, centered on a North American dimension. In this regard, another structuring dimension of the postdoc will consist of documenting and analyzing the mechanisms and policies supporting participatory research and science-society cooperation in the United States (for example, community-based participatory research approaches, university-affiliated cooperative extension services, or citizen science initiatives led by federal agencies and foundations), in order to identify what could usefully be imported, adapted, or brought into discussion within the French context. This work will resonate with the reflections already undertaken by ALLISS on the international opening of co-research models, and will be conducted in dialogue with the French actors already engaged in AC1. It will give rise to one or more study missions to the United States, drawing in particular on CREDA's network of North American partners, and to a comparative report juxtaposing American and French mechanisms (PICRI, ADEME's Coop'Éco, etc.). This transatlantic perspective constitutes an original contribution of the postdoc to PC 2/5 and to the dialogue with PC3. A specific approach will be expected regarding the monitoring of inter-actor cooperation. In this regard, the candidate will be expected to track other mechanisms that contribute (or have contributed) to strengthening these dynamics. The cooperative approaches implemented through ADEME's Coop'Éco funding scheme will be particularly interesting to document in this respect.

Recommended qualifications: A doctorate in the humanities and social sciences, preferably in political science, but by extension in sociology, economics, information and communication sciences, geography, or anthropology.

Experience with, or a strong interest in, international comparative studies, and/or knowledge of the North American research and innovation policy context, will be valued.

Your Work Environment

The position will be hosted on the Condorcet campus, at CREDA, a research unit under three supervising bodies (CNRS, IRD, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle), bringing together around twenty researchers and teacher-researchers.
