Job Description

Missions

As part of the research programme *Archaeology as Heritage: Remains, Traces, and Memories of a Scientific Activity*, funded by the ANR, you will contribute to research work focusing on two main areas: heritage law and the colonial history of heritage law.
In the first area, you will be responsible for sifting through, cataloguing and analysing the archives of the International Institute of Intellectual Cooperation and the International Office of Museums – bodies of the League of Nations – concerning, in general, the protection of cultural heritage and, more specifically, the International Conference on Excavations, held in Cairo in 1937. Drawing on the archive collection held in Paris at UNESCO headquarters and in Geneva at the United Nations Office, you will identify relevant sources on the League of Nations' activities in the field of culture and heritage, on the cultural aspects of mandates and protectorates, and on the integration of culture and heritage into the policies and activities implemented by the League of Nations. With regard to the archives of the 1937 International Conference on Excavations and, more generally, those relating to archaeology, you will compile an analytical index and propose an organised outline or table of contents with a view to their publication.
In addition, you will collect the colonial legislation which, from the early 19th century until independence, was adopted by the he colonial powers to ensure the protection of cultural and natural heritage and to regulate archaeological research in the territories and colonies under their administration. To this body of legislation and regulations, you should add the international conventions adopted by these colonial powers to protect, promote and exploit natural and cultural resources in their colonies. You will also ensure that relevant documentation concerning collections—particularly those made by missionaries—and the activities of these missions likely to have an impact on heritage and culture are identified and catalogued. This last point will particularly concern states which, whilst not having been directly involved in the colonial conquest of territories, nevertheless maintained a presence within colonial empires and close ties with colonised populations. You will carry out a thematic classification of the collected corpus, accompanied by analytical records. You will be involved in the publications and dissemination initiatives undertaken on the basis of the data collected and analysed
