Missions

Morphological study and taxonomic determination of wheat (Triticum) remains from Neolithic sites in the Middle East

Thanks to a unique corpus of archaeobotanical remains, the present project proposes to address two issues: the taxonomic and morphological diversity of wheat at the origin of agriculture and the diffusion of agricultural economies eastwards, beyond the first centres of the Fertile Crescent

Activities

- Make the inventory of wheat remains from Neolithic sites in the Middle East (Anatolia, Middle Euphrates, Caucasus, Iran) present in the archaeobotanical collections of UMR 7209 (AASPE)
- Expand the reference collection of cultivated wheats through exchanges with partners (National Herbarium, Arvalis)
- Establish and apply homogeneous morpho-anatomical criteria to the entire corpus
- Carry out taxonomic determinations according to the established criteria
- Summarise the diversity of cereal production in the Neolithic period in the regions concerned
- Prepare articles for publication in international peer-reviewed journals

- General knowledge of oriental archaeology
- In-depth knowledge of the archaeobotany of southwest Asia
- Thorough knowledge of plant anatomy and morphology
- Mastery of the principles of botanical classification and nomenclature
- Proficiency in scientific English (reading and writing)
- Basic knowledge of numerical data processing (statistics)
Know-how
- Prepare and study carbonised archaeobotanical assemblages
- Use binocular and scanning electron microscopes (SEM)
- Document archaeobotanical remains using macro-photography and SEM
- Take measurements (classical morphometry) on archaeobotanical remains using appropriate software (NIS elements)
Personal skills
- Plan and implement a scientific study
- Organise daily work
- Work in a team

Work Context

Most of the work will be carried out on the archaeobotanical platform of UMR 7209 (MNHN site, Jardin des Plantes, Paris 5ème), with the use of microscopy equipment and reference collections. The CDD will also be required to travel occasionally to UMR 7041 (Central Asia team) at the Maison René Ginouvès in Nanterre for meetings with the project co-ordinator (F. Brunet)
