Missions

The project consists in studying the adaptation of Paleozoic chondrichthyans to fresh waters by determining the anatomical innovations of vertebrates that allow adaptation to a major ecological change such as the transition between the marine and freshwater environnement.

Activités

The candidate will first work on the supposed ability of xenacanths to breathe in freshwater environments. This question will be assessed by the morphometric and biomechanical study of their branchial skeleton. This work will be based on a specimen from the Carboniferous-Permian boundary of Germany preserved in the collections of the MNHN. The candidate will have to segment and reconstruct the anatomical structures likely to be linked to respiratory efficiency. Then, this assessment will be done by comparative biomechanical and morphometric analyses based on previous studies on jawed vertebrates. In a second step, the candidate will work on the characterization of the ecomorphotype of xenacanths via morphometric studies on three sub-complete specimens. These data will have to be compared to those of other chondrichthyans. These studies will be contextualized by new phylogenetic analyses on the first chondrichthyans.

Compétences

- PhD in paleontology
- Solid knowledge of the anatomy and systematics of current and fossil Chondrichthyans, particularly the Xenacanths
- Knowledge of 3D reconstruction, morphometry and phylogenetics methods and their corresponding software (MIMICS, VG Studio, etc.)
- English level C1/C2
- Good experience in writing scientific articles for a specialized audience
- Good initiative and attention to detail expected
- Independent work

Contexte de travail

The research work will be carried out mainly at CR2P UMR7207, a unit of the CNRS, National Museum of Natural History and Sorbonne University located in Paris. The CR2P is organized around 2 research teams and several research support workshops. A detailed presentation of the laboratory's activities is available on the website https://paleo.mnhn.fr
