The researcher fellow will develop a computer software for the simulation of casting processes, based on the OpenFOAM® numerical platform and on independent modules in C++. The mathematical model to be implemented already exists. The researcher fellow will work in close collaboration with two external SME partners and will interact with industrial partners. The code developed by the researcher fellow will be interfaced with modules developed by the partners.


• Design and development of the computer software (C++ and OpenFOAM®)
• Verification and validation of numerical models
• Numerical simulation and analysis of the results
• Writing of documentation and scientific papers


• Excellent knowledge in heat and mass transfer, fluid dynamics and phase change.
• Excellent knowledge in numerical methods, expertise in the finite volume method.
• Good level in computer programming, experience in object-oriented C++, MPI parallel programming.
• Experience in development of OpenFOAM® solvers.
• Sense of initiative.
• Excellent capabilities for teamwork
• Fluent in English, good level in French.

Work Context

The Institut Jean Lamour (IJL) is a joint research unit of the CNRS and the University of Lorraine. The IJL has about 500 members including researchers, teacher-researchers, engineering, technical and administrative staff, doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows, and hosts about 80 internships per year. It collaborates with more than 150 industrial partners and its academic collaborations are deployed in some 30 countries. Its exceptional instrumental park is spread over 4 sites, the main one being a new building located on the Artem campus in Nancy.
The study will be conducted in the Solidification group of IJL in the framework of the project OpenSolid, under the responsibility of and reporting to Dr. Miha Založnik. The objective of the project is the development of a new-generation software for the simulation of casting processes. The software will be commercialized in collaboration with the project partners.

Constraints and risks

No particular risk, office work on a computer, occasional travel (short trips).
