Study of the galvanic corrosion kinetics of an overhead cable
One of the most problematic damage mechanisms for aluminum-steel conductors is the galvanic corrosion that can occur inside the cable at the interface between the different materials (galvanization, aluminum, steel). However, the kinetics of the galvanic corrosion phenomenon in a thin-film configuration is very poorly described, which makes it difficult to predict the lifetime of these equipment.


The objective of this project is to set up an experimental device of thin-film electrolyte to characterize aluminum and galvanized steel cables of various surface states and to optimize the different cell configurations to be studied. In a second step, the corrosion of each metal (aluminum, galvanized steel) as well as the galvanic corrosion of the Al/galvanized steel couple will be studied according to different parameters (nature of the electrolyte, thickness of the thin layer, ratio of the anode/cathode surfaces...). These studies will be completed by optical and scanning electron microscopy observations to characterize ex situ the galvanic coupling and the influence of the confined environment on it.


The candidate should have a PhD in electrochemistry and/or corrosion, with a good level of general and scientific culture and solid laboratory experience. Previous experience in modeling electrochemical processes, including impedance spectroscopy, would be an important asset.
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated for multidisciplined research in an important, dynamic field. The candidate should possess good analytical, synthesis, innovation and communication skills with qualities of adaptability and creativity.
Excellent English skills are necessary. Our research group functions primarily in English, all publications will be in English, and participation in international conferences will be expected.

Work Context

The work will be carried out at the Laboratoire de Réactivité de Surface (UMR 7197) at Sorbonne University (Paris) in the framework of a collaboration contract with RTE
