Missions

In the frame of the SVOM (Space Variable Objects Monitor) space mission a French-Chinese space project for the observation of high energy astrophysical phenomena foreseen for a launch in mid-2022, the engineer will contribute to the development and the production start-up of the data processing and scientific analysis workflow for the ECLAIRs instrument (a wide field coded mask telescope on-board SVOM and working in the energy band 4-150 keV)

Activities

- Modelling of ECLAIRs instrument, in collaboration with the researchers and relative pipeline implementation
- Integration and propagation of instrumental effects and their correction in the pipeline workflow
- Design and development of a Python 3 data analysis software system: algorithmics, FITS files and command line interfaces
- Implementation and verification of interfaces with scientific and calibration databases.
- Software testing (unit, integration, functional, scientific performance evaluation)
- Access to mission databases: scientific and calibration databases.
- Technical documentation: docstring/sphinx, wiki/redmine, wiki/gitlab
- Contact on instrumental data for this project.

Skills

- Good knowledge of Python 3 and its libraries: numpy, scipy, astropy, matplotlib
- Knowledge in code optimization with C++, Cython. Knowledge of Numba Python library would be a plus.
- Good knowledge of the LINUX kernel
- Virtual machines and Docker
- General knowledge in astrophysics
- General knowledge in photometry
- Knowledge in signal and image processing
- General knowledge in detector physics
- Web programming would be a plus

Work Context

The selected candidate will work within the IT department of the CNRS/IN2P3 AstroParticule et Cosmologie (APC) laboratory on the site of Paris University in the 13th Arrondissement of Paris. The team is composed of 4 software engineers and 3 researchers working in the field of high-energy astrophysics. Several other French astrophysics laboratories are involved in the SVOM mission and in particular a close collaboration is established with the CEA-Saclay (Comissariat à l´Energie Atomique ) which is responsible for the SVOM French Science Centre, and with IRAP-Toulouse, (Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie) responsible for the ECLAIRs instrument center.
