Missions

As part of the activities of LOCEAN, a partner of the Horizon Europe AMRIT project (Advance Marine Research Infrastructures Together) in the field of physical and biogeochemical observation of the ocean, we are seeking a skilled and motivated Web-based Application Developer to join our multi-disciplinary team. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain responsive, scalable, and user-friendly web applications to support the coordination of oceanographic research cruise operations and the management of associated data and metadata.

Activités

Your work will directly contribute to Work Packages #9-10 of the AMRIT project, which aim to enhance interoperability and rea-time standardization of metadata collection for ocean samples and sensing platforms.

Key responsibilities
The main activities will include:
- Upgrade and improve the interface and back-end of an existing scientific cruise data server in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Develop web-based tools to support cruise planning, operations, and the standardized capture of cruise-related data and metadata.
- Collaborate with scientists, research engineers, and project partners to translate wireframes and designs into high-quality code and ensure the platform meets user needs and project objectives.
- Implement real-time data workflows and metadata integration across a variety of marine sensing platforms and optimize applications for maximum performance, scalability, and responsiveness.
- Ensure usability, performance, and compliance with relevant data standards (e.g., ISO, SeaDataNet).
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code following best practices and coding standards
- Continuously identify, evaluate, and implement improvements to the user experience
- Contribute to the digital infrastructure of the Technical Support Centre of the European Ocean Observing System (EOOS), supporting the integration of marine research infrastructures across Europe.

Compétences

- master's degree in Software Engineering, Data science, Computer science or related fields or equivalent work experience. Knowledge of Oceanography or Marine Science and/or willingness to learn would be highly regarded.
- Proficiency in PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and one or more front-end frameworks
- Experience with version control tools (e.g., Git) and modern development workflows (CI/CD, Agile)
- Familiarity with back-end technologies and database integration (e.g., Node.js, Express, SQL/NoSQL)
- Knowledge of accessibility standards and security best practices
- Self-motivated and able to manage time and tasks effectively
- Excellent communication skills with high level of written and oral (scientific) English
- Teamwork abilities and experience or willingness to work in a distributed or international team environment

Contexte de travail

The National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) is one of 26 European partners in the Horizon Europe funded project AMRIT, a pioneering project designed to revolutionise the landscape of marine research infrastructures in Europe, strengthening their ability to respond to Europe's policy and global scientific challenges ( https://www.amritproject.eu/). LOCEAN is one of the multidisciplinary CNRS laboratory, renowned in particular for its work on ocean observation and modeling (see https://www.locean-ipsl.upmc.fr/index.php?lang= Fr).
AMRIT is designed to advance Marine Research Infrastructures (MRIs) by structuring collaboration among key stakeholders, including marine science researchers, platform operators, infrastructure managers, policy makers, and the general public. By developing tools and services integrating the operations of marine observation platforms, AMRIT aims to ensure the full utilisation of sensors and platforms, accelerate their evolution, and establish the full coherence of the ocean data value chain.
The EOOS Technical Support Center (EOOS TSC), established by AMRIT, is an information platform and service for fully integrated metadata and information, whose aim is to ensure the overall consistency of the ocean data value chain produced by MRIs operators and the marine science community more generally.
What We Offer:
- A collaborative and purpose-driven research environment at LOCEAN.
- Opportunity to contribute to European-scale marine infrastructure development.
- Professional development in scientific software and data systems.
- Flexibility depending on experience and role requirements.
