Ocean modelling is essential in present-day oceanography and climatology, for fundamental research projects that aim at understanding better the past, present and future oceans, as well as for operational applications with potential high impact on society and the blue economy. The European oceanographic community self-structured into a consortium, called NEMO, to ensure the sustainable development of its ocean modelling tool. The NEMO platform is currently used by over 200 projects worldwide and employed by more than 1600 users.
The objective of this project is to develop, support and promote test cases for dedicated scientific objectives, based on NEMO platform, within NEMO R&D team of LOCEAN-IPSL. There are several motivations to define test cases for NEMO (e.g. “lock-exchange”, overflow, vortex over sea mount…) : to validate new schemes, to demonstrate NEMO functionalities, to provide material for courses/summer schools, to evaluate some physical processes and to enhance interactions with other/new communities (applied mathematics, for example).
The post-doctoral fellow will be in charge of supporting and promoting NEMO test cases through various actions : scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations to international scientific assemblies, preparation of courses… He or she shall contribute to the development of new test cases, in close collaboration with NEMO developers.
Candidates must hold a recent PhD in physical oceanography and have some experience in ocean modelling. Writing skills and/or the ability to promote his/her research would be a bonus, while capacity to work in a team is a must.
CNRS is the major center for research in France and is under the responsibility of the French Ministry of Education and Research. It is one of the funding institutions of LOCEAN, a laboratory in Paris dedicated to advancing fundamental research in oceanography via observations and numerical experiments. NEMO R&D is a team of LOCEAN, with 12 permanent engineers and researchers led by Dr Deshayes (supervisor) which aims at developing and using ocean models, in particular the NEMO ocean model directly funded by CNRS. LOCEAN is also part of the IPSL federation and NEMO R&D is particularly active in IPSL-Climate Modeling Center, which develops the IPSL climate model (currently named IPSL-CM6) and participates actively in the coordination and realization of the CMIP6 exercice that produces IPCC future climate projections.
