Job Description
Missions
Consolidate the processing and qualification chain for remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) data derived from hyperspectral radiometric measurements acquired by BGC-Argo floats, in order to establish a qualified database for satellite validation and scientific exploitation, and contribute to its scientific valorisation.
Activity
• Carry out delayed-mode processing of BGC-Argo hyperspectral radiometric data, including the application of quality-control procedures, data verification and validation;
• Consolidate the procedures used to select data and establish a qualified Rrs database meeting the requirements for satellite validation and scientific applications;
• Finalise and consolidate Rrs data-processing tools in order to achieve a robust, documented, reproducible and transferable processing chain;
• Maintain and update the databases produced and document the associated procedures;
• Contribute to the scientific valorisation of the methodological developments and datasets produced, including the finalisation of scientific publications;
• Initiate the scientific exploitation of the qualified Rrs database, particularly in relation to hyperspectral satellite observations.
Your Profil
Skills
• Mathematics, statistics; marine optics
• Scientific computing tools
• Numerical modelling and simulation
• Expertise in programming languages (R, Matlab, Shell, Python);
• Data collection, analysis and processing;
• Proficiency in Linux/Unix environments;
• English language proficiency: B2 level (CEFR);
• Knowledge of oceanographic data collection.
Your Work Environment
The BGC-Argo programme is the biogeochemical component of the international OneArgo programme, initiated in 1999 as a pilot project of the GOOS climate research programme led by the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) and IOC (Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission). OneArgo is a global network of 4,000 autonomous platforms deployed worldwide that measure oceanographic parameters and transmit them via satellite. OneArgo data are used by a broad scientific community.
Although relatively recent, the biogeochemical component BGC-Argo has expanded considerably in recent years and now represents one of the largest existing databases on ocean biogeochemistry. It covers six internationally recognised biogeochemical variables: chlorophyll-a concentration (a proxy for phytoplankton biomass), particle concentration, nitrate concentration, dissolved oxygen, irradiance and pH. The LOV plays an active international role in developing quality-control and adjustment procedures for these biogeochemical variables acquired by the floats.
In recent years, the laboratory has specifically implemented hyperspectral radiometric sensors on BGC-Argo floats to provide data suitable for the validation of satellite ocean-colour observations. Methodological and software developments have already been undertaken to process these measurements and derive remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) data meeting the quality requirements for their use. The proposed work builds on these developments. It will focus on consolidating the processing chain and quality-control procedures, and on establishing a qualified Rrs database suitable for satellite validation and scientific exploitation.
