Job Description

Missions

Hydrodynamic interactions between Brownian particles and nearby walls can generate lift. Such nonequilibrium interactions differ from the usual electrostatic or van der Waals forces. The goal of this post-doctoral contract is to work out the modification to the Gibbs-Boltzmann distribution arising from such interactions, as well as the consequences on the dynamics of the system and its potential implications on observable quantities and on potential practical applications.

Activity

The postdoc will work with tools from non-equilibrium statistical physics theory to develop a theoretical framework describing an ensemble of interacting particles driven out of equilibrium in the presence of interfaces. The work of the post-doctoral research may include analytical calculations, scaling arguments, toy models and numerical simulations. Other activities could be considered depending on the needs, including advisory work. Lastly, the project is embedded in an active experimental lab and the postdoc will be expected to interact strongly with experimentalists.

Your Profil

Skills

The candidate is expected to have a strong background in theoretical physics, including nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. Desired skills include but are not limited to Langevin equations, Fokker-Planck equations, stochastic field theory including stochastic density functional theory, as well as the capacity to develop numerical tools for the simulation of such equations including discretisation of stochastic differential equations. A culture of developing scaling laws to extract essential physics is a plus. Experience in experimentation or strong collaborations with experimentalists including data analysis will be considered assets.

Your Work Environment

The Gulliver Laboratory is a joint research unit (CNRS UMR 7083) based at ESPCI Paris – PSL, recognised for its work in fluid mechanics, soft matter and the physics of non-equilibrium systems. It brings together around twenty researchers and lecturer-researchers, along with their teams. The postdoctoral position will be based within a team whose research focuses on flows in confined spaces, interfaces, small-scale transport phenomena, and statistical physics of non-equilibrium systems at the PGG Microfluidics institute. The postdoctoral researcher will be supervised by the project leaders, working in close collaboration with the team members.
