Job Description
Missions
The ANR De-Chalco programme aims to study a corrosion product (chalconatronite) associated with small Egyptian statuettes held in several museums in France, and to propose a treatment. The postdoctoral research focuses on the preparation of model samples for laboratory experiments. Based on the data provided (alloy composition and manufacturing techniques) and with a view to ensuring the samples are representative of materials produced using ancient techniques, natural ores will be selected and bronze samples will be produced in accordance with protocols derived from experimental archaeology at the IRAMAT experimental archaeology platform in Melle (79).
Activity
The researcher will take part in various activities both in the laboratory and outside it (at museums and at the Melle experimental platform) with a view to proposing a protocol for the production of analogues. He or she will compile a review of the current state of the art regarding the analysis of Egyptian bronzes and the experimental approach to the production of copper-based metals and alloys through experimentation. Once the protocol has been established, he or she will be required to produce these analogues in accordance with the established parameters. He or she will carry out quality controls throughout the production chain using pXRF, SEM-EDS and XRF-XRD. His or her work will focus on the production of the analogues. The researcher will produce a detailed activity report, contribute to the dissemination of results and promote the project during the experimental sessions.
Your Profil
Skills
Experience in experimental palaeometallurgy of non-ferrous ores and copper-based alloys
Knowledge of production processes for ancient copper and its alloys
Knowledge of sample preparation protocols (cutting, polishing)
Mastery of analytical tools (pXRF, EDS-SEM, XRF-XRD) and the interpretation of results
Writing skills
Ability to meet production deadlines
Fluency in English
driving licence desirable
Your Work Environment
The project brings together four partners: IRAMAT UMR 7065, LASIE at the University of La Rochelle, the Arc'Antique laboratory and the HiCSA laboratory at Panthéon-Sorbonne Paris 1 University. The researcher will be based at the IRAMAT site in Saclay. He or she will work regularly at the Melle site (Deux-Sèvres) and may undertake assignments at the IRAMAT site in Orléans as well as at the project's partner institutes..
Constraints and risks
Regular travel between the laboratory and the experimental platform is to be expected. A high degree of mobility is therefore required. Organisational skills are also expected. As the role involves working in an interdisciplinary environment, an open mind and good communication skills are essential.
