Job Description
Missions
The Engineer will contribute to the development, deployment and operation of a real-time seismic data processing system integrating machine learning and artificial intelligence methods for the automatic detection and location of seismic events. Developed as part of the PEPR REINFORCE project, this infrastructure aims to improve the performance of seismic processing pipelines while reducing the need for manual intervention.
The successful candidate will contribute to the design and implementation of data processing workflows based on modern orchestration technologies, including Apache Airflow, as well as containerized environments (Docker). These developments will be carried out in close collaboration with the EOST Data Centre to ensure their integration, deployment and operation within the production infrastructure.
Activity
Software development will be carried out primarily in Python and C++, while integrating with the EOST Data Centre software stack and with widely used software packages from the seismological community, including SeisComP and SeisBench. The developed solutions will become part of the EOST data processing and dissemination ecosystem and will be compatible with the national infrastructures dedicated to the exchange and distribution of seismological data.
The machine learning and artificial intelligence methods integrated into this infrastructure will be developed and validated by seismologists from BCSF-Rénass and the ITI GeoT. Therefore, prior expertise in artificial intelligence is not required. However, an interest in seismology, automated scientific data processing and distributed software architectures will be considered an asset and will facilitate successful integration into the project.
The position is based at EOST (École et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terre - School and Observatory of Earth Sciences) in Strasbourg, France, within BCSF-Rénass (French Central Seismological Bureau - National Seismic Monitoring Network). The successful candidate will work closely with the scientific teams of BCSF-Rénass, the ITI GeoT (Interdisciplinary Thematic Institute “Geosciences for the Energy Transition”) and the EOST Data Centre. The engineer will be appointed to BCSF-Rénass under the supervision of the Head of the Department.

Skills
Required Skills
● Strong software development skills, primarily in Python; experience with C++ is a plus.
● Good knowledge of Linux environments.
● Experience with collaborative development (Git) and software engineering best practices.
● Knowledge of containerized environments (Docker).
● Ability to design and maintain robust applications for production environments.
● Ability to work in a team and interact with scientists and engineers.
Desired Skills
● Knowledge of workflow orchestration technologies (Apache Airflow or equivalent).
● Familiarity with distributed software architectures.
● Experience with scientific data processing.
● Interest in seismology or geosciences.
● No prior knowledge of machine learning or artificial intelligence is required; these methods are developed and validated by the project's scientific teams.

EOST is an Observatory of the Universe Sciences (OSU) whose mission is to advance Earth science through the development and operation of observational facilities, the acquisition, management and dissemination of scientific data, and the development of the tools required for their processing and analysis. EOST relies on a Joint Research Support Unit (UAR 830), jointly operated by the CNRS and the University of Strasbourg, which provides operational support for observation activities and facilitates access to scientific data for the research community.
The position offers the full range of benefits available to CNRS contract staff (including public transport support, on-site catering facilities, opportunities, access to the CNRS employee benefits programme, etc.).
Constraints and risks
● Work performed primarily at a computer workstation.
● Prolonged screen work.
