Job Description
Missions
The BISE team — Isotopic and Experimental Biogeochemistry — at the Institut Terre et Environnement de Strasbourg (ITES) is recruiting a engineer as part of the European INTERREG VI ReactiveCity project, dedicated to understanding and reducing emerging urban contamination.
The project aims to develop an integrated study of chemical contaminants at the scale of the city of Strasbourg, combining advanced chemical analyses, molecular biology approaches and environmental data. Particular attention will be paid to PFAS, pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, urban biocides and other emerging micropollutants.
The objective is to better understand the sources, fluxes, transformations and impacts of these contaminants in urban socio-hydrosystems, from stormwater networks and surface waters to wastewater treatment plants and receiving environments. The project relies on innovative approaches based on non-target high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), environmental monitoring and spatial data integration, in order to identify the main hotspots of contamination and vulnerability.
The engineer (M/F) will contribute to the development of a unique urban-scale demonstrator linking chemical contaminants and aquatic environmental quality, in close interaction with local authorities and water management stakeholders.
Activity
The work will be carried out within an interdisciplinary programme combining environmental chemistry, biogeochemistry, microbiology and urban sciences. It will include in particular:
designing and implementing a monitoring network for emerging contaminants at the scale of the city of Strasbourg;
carrying out field campaigns across different compartments of the urban water cycle, including rivers, stormwater networks, wastewater treatment plants, urban discharges and infiltration areas;
analysing organic contaminants by LC-MS/MS and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), including non-target screening approaches and the identification of emerging compounds;
integrating chemical, hydrological and spatial data to identify the main vulnerability factors affecting urban socio-hydrosystems;
developing city-scale maps of contamination, fluxes and risks;
processing, interpreting and promoting the scientific outputs of the project.
Your Profil
Skills
Essential technical skills
Master's degree in environmental sciences, chemistry, biogeochemistry, hydrology or a related field;
experience in the analysis of organic contaminants in environmental matrices;
skills in scientific data processing and analysis.
Desired skills
Experience in LC-MS/MS or high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS).
Cross-cutting skills
Autonomy and organisational skills;
ability to work in an interdisciplinary team;
good level of scientific English, equivalent to B2.
Your Work Environment
The Institut Terre et Environnement de Strasbourg (ITES) is a joint research unit — UMR 7063 — under the supervision of the CNRS, the University of Strasbourg and ENGEES. The unit develops interdisciplinary research on continental hydrosystems, geochemistry and interactions between societies and the environment.
The engineer (M/F) will join the BISE team, which is recognised for its work in contaminant biogeochemistry and environmental isotope science. He or she will benefit from a state-of-the-art analytical environment, including LC-MS/MS and Orbitrap HRMS instruments.
The project is part of a strong research dynamic around urban issues, micropollutants and environmental health, in connection with national and European initiatives.
The unit is located on the Strasbourg campus and is easily accessible by public transport. CNRS staff benefit from institutional services, including catering, transport support and social benefits.
Constraints and risks
Fieldwork in urban environments, including rivers, wastewater treatment plants, networks and infiltration areas;
experimental laboratory work;
handling of contaminants at low concentrations.
