Job Description
Missions
The Earth and Environmental Sciences Institute of Strasbourg (ITES, UMR 7063) is recruiting a Research Engineer for the European INTERREG VI project "ReactiveCity," which focuses on understanding, reducing, and fostering public debate regarding emerging urban contaminants.
The project specifically addresses urban biocides found in building facades, construction materials, and certain household applications. It aims to gain a better understanding of their sources, uses, and pathways into aquatic environments, as well as the means to reduce emissions at the source.
This position falls within the project's final phase. The engineer's primary role will be to help harmonize, promote, and transfer ReactiveCity's findings to local authorities, urban planning stakeholders, professionals, students, the scientific community, and the general public.
The successful candidate will work at the interface of ITES, SAGE, INSA, the consortium's academic partners, and the project's three partner cities: Strasbourg, Freiburg, and Landau.
The role will comprise three main components:
finalizing work on stakeholder networks, usage patterns, and alternatives to urban biocides;
designing dissemination tools, such as a platform-based strategy, bilingual educational content, and QR-code-based trails;
preparing, organizing, and facilitating the final ReactiveCity Forum, scheduled for June 2027 in Strasbourg.
Activity
The work is part of an interdisciplinary program combining environmental science, social science, urban planning, science communication, and European project coordination. Activities will include:
contributing to the final analysis of the chains of actors involved in the production, prescription, use, and substitution of urban biocides;
participating in identifying barriers to and drivers for the use of alternatives, in collaboration with scientific and local partners;
comparing source-reduction or "zero-biocide" initiatives across the three partner cities;
helping to define a cross-border dissemination strategy structured by target audience and platform (citizen engagement, apps, education, research);
translating the project's scientific and operational results into clear, accessible messages tailored to diverse audiences;
participating in the design of bilingual (French/German) educational content, such as fact sheets, short texts, digital materials, scripts, or video clips;
managing content collection, editorial structuring, and partner validation;
contributing to the rollout of QR-code-based dissemination trails in Strasbourg, Freiburg, and Landau, with a particular focus on the Môle Citadelle pilot site in Strasbourg;
participating in preparations for the final ReactiveCity Forum, including the program, speakers, communication materials, discussion facilitation, and logistical coordination;
assisting with deliverable tracking, meeting preparation, minutes, updating communication materials, and the project's final summary.
Your Profil
Skills
Essential technical skills
Master's degree or equivalent in environmental science, social science, urban planning, spatial planning, science communication/outreach, European project management, or a related field;
strong skills in synthesizing, writing, and formatting scientific and operational results;
experience in project coordination, workshop facilitation, science communication/outreach, or the dissemination/valorization of research findings;
ability to work with diverse partners: researchers, local authorities, technical departments, urban planning stakeholders, professionals, associations, students, and the general public;
proficiency in written and spoken French;
good level of English.
Desirable skills
Knowledge of issues related to urban micropollutants, biocides, stormwater management, permeable cities, or sustainable urban planning;
experience with European or cross-border projects, or projects involving local authorities;
knowledge of German or the ability to work in a Franco-German context;
experience producing educational materials, web content, video clips, or science communication/outreach materials;
proficiency in basic tools for layout, content management, mapping, or interactive digital media.
Cross-functional skills
Autonomy, attention to detail, and organizational skills;
ability to prioritize tasks during the final phase of a project;
interpersonal skills and diplomacy within an interdisciplinary, cross-border consortium;
initiative;
ability to translate complex scientific results into clear, actionable messages tailored to target audiences;
interest in collaborative work and the interface between science, society, and local areas.
Your Work Environment
The Strasbourg Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences (ITES) is a joint research unit (UMR 7063) under the joint supervision of the CNRS, the University of Strasbourg, and ENGEES. The unit conducts interdisciplinary research on continental hydrosystems, geochemistry, contaminants, and the interactions between society and the environment.
The engineer will be based at ITES, working in close collaboration with the team leading the ReactiveCity project and with consortium partners—notably SAGE, INSA, partner local authorities, and the involved German teams.
ReactiveCity is part of a cross-border initiative aimed at understanding the sources, uses, flows, and impacts of urban biocides, while also developing concrete alternatives in collaboration with stakeholders in urban planning, water management, architecture, and urban policy.
The project's final phase is strategic: it aims to translate scientific findings into dissemination tools, educational materials, and actionable proposals for the Upper Rhine region.
Constraints and risks
Potential travel in Strasbourg, Freiburg, and Landau;
meetings with academic, institutional, and regional partners;
occasional participation in public events, workshops, or meetings that may take place in the late afternoon or evening;
screen-based work and coordination of digital content.
