Job Description
Missions
The recruited post-doctoral researcher will work within the framework of the EU CETP GEOTWINS project, which aims at deploying a prototype digital twin (DT) for deep geothermal energy power and heat generation. The project will address more specifically the integration of passive monitoring of deep geothermal reservoir using ambient noise interferometry using the case study of the Upper Rhine Graben (Vendenheim, Soulz-sous-Forêts, Rittershoffen, Schwabwiller) as a demonstrator. The successful candidate will work at ITES (Strasbourg Institute of Earth & Environment) for on year in the seismology group of the ITI GeoT (Interdisciplinary Thematic Institute for the energy system transition) and in strong collaboration with the project partners (ETHZ, IEG).
Activity
The recruited post-doctoral researcher will:
Characterize ambient seismic noise in the Upper Rhine Graben, its sources, and the performance of the various instruments including Raspberry Shake devices
Build correlation functions for interferometry measurements of seismic velocity changes
Correct for the influence of near-surface hydrological processes (e.g., water table, soil moisture variations)
Assess the sensitivity of seismic velocity changes related to deep reservoir evolution
Develop forward modelling of poro-acousto-elastic effects to interpret field observations
Apply the technique for the deep geothermal projects in Strasbourg and Outre-Forêt (France) areas
Your Profil
Skills
The recruited post-doctoral researcher must have:
PhD in seismology (at time of employment)
Experience working in observational seismology
Expertise in several of data science / big data analysis / parametric time series analysis / statistics / forward modeling
Programming skills (Python, FEM, SPECFEM)
Experience in communicating, writing, publishing scientific works
Proficiency in English level C2 (according to the European Framework for languages)
Your Work Environment
The recruited post-doctoral researcher will work on passive monitoring of deep geothermal reservoirs using ambient noise interferometry for a period of one year at ITES (Strasbourg Institute of Earth & Environment) in Strasbourg (France), under the supervision of Olivier Lengliné and Jean Schmittbuhl, in collaboration with Dimitri Zigone and Qingyu, Wang (who are all members of the Seismology team at ITES). ITES (UMR7063) is a research unit under the supervision of the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) and the University of Strasbourg. The project is hosted in the framework of the Interdisciplinary Thematic Institute for the energy system transition (ITI GeoT - https://geot.unistra.fr), a program part or the excellence initiative at Strasbourg University which explores geoscience solutions to the energy transition, with a particular focus on deep groundwater: exploration, characterization and optimization of crustal reservoirs, risk management and of public perceptions.
