Job Description
Missions
The postdoc will participate in the RAMHO project, whose 2026–2028 program is as follows. During the second half of the 20th century, musical practices were completely transformed, on the one hand, by the emergence and widespread adoption of techniques for analyzing, synthesizing, and processing sound, and on the other hand, by scientific knowledge regarding the phenomenon of sound. Musical acoustics, computer music, and what is more broadly referred to as music research—which is linked to the integration of new technologies into music—have led scientists and musicians to collaborate within new institutions to develop new tools, knowledge, and expertise. Drawing on both archival research and the collection of oral testimonies, the RAMHO project (Musical Acoustics and Research in France: An Oral History) examines the origins of these
Activity
The researcher will be required to conduct interviews (in the South region and possibly elsewhere in France) with key figures in the history of acoustics and music research and to identify, collect, and study (prior to the interview) the corresponding archival sources. He or she will participate in the research already initiated by the project leaders regarding the identified study sites in the south of France: le Centre de recherches scientifiques industrielles et maritimes from Marseille (CRSIM) qui a donné naissance au Laboratoire de mécanique et acoustique (LMA), Musique informatique de Marseille (MIM), Groupe de musique expérimentale from Marseille (GMEM), Centre International de Recherche Musicale from Nice (CIRM), and, to a lesser extent, le Groupe de Musique électro-acoustique from Albi (GMEA) as well as Paris's Groupe de Recherche Musicale de Paris (GRM).
The researcher will have the opportunity to discuss the adopted methodology and the direction of their research with the team, and to carry out some of their tasks in collaboration with the other researchers on the project. He or she will be required to transcribe all conducted interviews and analyze the collected data in order to contribute to the publication of scientific articles, essays, and multimedia pieces. He or she will be required to help organize the scientific meetings of the PRISM partner within the RAMHO project: the RAMHO seminars (Sept.–Nov. 2028), as well as the final conference scheduled for September 2028.
Your Profil
Skills
The candidate must have successfully defended a dissertation in the history of science, media, and technology with a focus on music and sound, or in musicology with a component in sound science and technology. The dissertation must have been defended no later than two years prior to the start of the contract. Research experience in the field of archival studies and using interviews will be preferred. Ideally, the candidate will also have skills in the field of digital humanities. He or she must be fluent in French and have a good command of English.
Your Work Environment
The position will be based at the Maison de la Recherche (MdR), Aix-Marseille University, Schuman Campus, Aix-en-Provence.
The Maison de la Recherche of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences was established with two main objectives: to provide the Schuman Campus's humanities and social sciences research units with dedicated facilities, and to foster interdisciplinary research collaborations between research units, supported by the presence of the university presses and two doctoral schools.
Located at the entrance to the Humanities Campus at 29 Avenue Robert Schuman in Aix-en-Provence, the Maison de la Recherche occupies a 4,000 m² building inaugurated in 2013.
Today, the Maison brings together 10 research units working in the fields of arts, literature, languages and cultures, philosophy, and psychology, as well as an Aix-Marseille University-certified technology platform dedicated to the instrumented analysis of behaviour for ergonomics and user experience (Homme et humanités, corpus et comportements – H2C2).
It also houses an institutional training and research institute (Institut Créativité et Innovations, InCIAM), two doctoral schools (ED 354 and 356), the Doctoral Studies and Habilitation to Direct Research (HDR) Office, and a university publishing house (Aix-Marseille University Press).
Constraints and risks
The researcher will be expected to conduct interviews (in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region and, potentially, elsewhere in France).
