The objective of the TiMMA project is to understand the role of timber in Minoan and Mycenaean Architecture (load bearing system, strenghtening, parasismic or not) through the study of a selected number of sites in Greece and Crete and a multidisciplinary approach.
The objective of the one-year post-doctoral contract is to specify the framework for the analysis of wood remains in architecture. The aim is to create a multilingual dictionary (French, English, Greek at least) of wooden elements in Aegean architecture, which will serve as a methodological guide for archaeologists in the identification of wooden remains and will allow the definition of a standardized lexicon. The writing should be accompanied by original graphic productions (sketches, plans, photographs) essential to the understanding of the architectural structures.
The post-doctoral researcher will also contribute to the project by ensuring the follow-up of the database filled in by the different archaeological teams on the partner sites, in particular to ensure the consistency of the data inventory
- Design and writing of a guide for the identification of wood elements in Aegean architecture with a multilingual lexicon (French, English, modern Greek at least).
- Methodological advice and assistance to archaeologists and architects icontributing to the database.
- Travel to Greece for data inventory and/or assistance with data entry by other project members.
The candidate should have a PhD in archaeology, combined with expertise in wooden architecture, preferably in the Aegean or Mediterranean protohistoric area. Skills are expected in :
- computer drawing (2D, potentially 3D);
- macro photography;
- database use and management (Omeka S).
The candidate must have the ability to carry out his/her mission independently (with the objective of one or more international publications) while participating in the collective dynamics of the project.
The working languages will be mainly French and English.
The contract will be mainly carried out in the premises of the research laboratory UMR 7041-ArScAn (Archaeology and Sciences of Antiquity) at the “Maison des Sciences de l'Homme - Mondes” of Nanterre (France). It will be supervised by Maia Pomadère, member of ArScAn (team of Aegean prehistory), Senior Lecturer at the University of Paris 1, with the collaboration of Eleftheria Tsakanika, engineer in architecture and teacher at the National Technical University of Athens.
Constraints and risks
Missions in Greece are to be foreseen for the collection of data, the participation in meetings or scientific events, provided that the sanitary situation allows it.
