Job Description
Missions
The recruited Phonetics Engineer will participate in research activities as part of the ANR project "ARTANY: Universal Articulator (Articulate Anything)" (ANR-25-CE23-6945).
They will contribute to:
- Analyzing data acquired during recordings conducted in French and Mandarin as part of the project.
- Promoting the project's results, including public communication and disseminating presentation materials such as blogs and videos on social media.
Activity
The Phonetics Engineer will be responsible for:
- Verifying phonetic segmentations for a set of sentences spoken in French and Mandarin.
- Analyzing articulatory data obtained from MRI scans.
- Recruiting Mandarin-speaking volunteers learning French.
- Promoting the project's results.
Your Profil
Skills
- Proven experience in handling speech data.
- Proficiency in phonetic annotation software.
- Proficiency in image annotation software.
- Proficiency in analysis tools, particularly signal and image processing software (e.g., MATLAB), would be a plus.
- Autonomy and initiative-taking ability.
- Ability to work in multidisciplinary and international teams.
- Proficiency in Mandarin would be a plus.
Your Work Environment
The Laboratoire de Phonétique et Phonologie (LPP) is a Joint Research Unit (UMR7018) of the CNRS. The researchers and teacher-researchers associated with this unit specialize in research and teaching in phonetics, phonology, and automatic speech processing. Their work—whether experimental, theoretical, or applied—benefits from the multidisciplinary synergy among teacher-researchers from Sorbonne Nouvelle University, CNRS researchers and engineers, and students from Master's to PhD levels. It also relies on a significant experimental platform, open to all national and international researchers working on speech.
The ANR project "ARTANY: Universal Articulator (Articulate Anything)" (ANR-25-CE23-6945), led by Pierre-André Vuissoz, is a collaborative project involving IADI, Loria, and LPP.
The ARTANY project aims to reconstruct the three-dimensional dynamics of the vocal tract for all languages and speakers. It falls within the field of articulatory synthesis and combines real-time MRI, 3D anatomical MRI, synchronized acoustic signals, fine phonetic annotations, and advanced artificial intelligence methods. The goal is to move beyond approaches based on static representations of phonemes to model the real temporal dynamics of speech, including coarticulation and anticipation.
The recruited engineer will primarily work on analyzing articulatory data, with a focus on the phonetic production of nasality in Mandarin and French.
Scientific supervision will be provided by Angélique Amelot (HDR), with co-supervision by Didier Demolin. The follow-up will be based on regular meetings with the supervisors, participation in the project's weekly scientific meetings, and access to the MRI databases and acoustic recordings acquired through the ARTANY project.
