Job Description
Missions
Develop and study a spectral broadening and shaping system for a frequency comb to cover the H+K spectral bands (1.4–2.5 µm) by combining spectral broadening in photonic crystal fibers and difference frequency generation. The goal is to achieve an ultra-stable spectrum with a flat envelope and uniform 16 GHz spacing for the calibration of astronomical spectrographs dedicated to the detection and characterization of exoplanets (astrocomb).
Activity
The recruited candidate will be responsible for performing numerical simulations of spectral broadening in photonic crystal fibers and difference frequency generation in nonlinear crystals. They will also be in charge of the experimental development and validation of the astrocomb prototype and will participate in collaborative on-sky field tests to validate the system's performance under real-world conditions. Additionally, they will be involved in publishing the results in scientific journals and presenting them at international conferences.
Your Profil
Skills
The candidate must hold a master's degree (or equivalent) in physics, with experimental laboratory experience in optics or atomic/molecular physics. Practical skills in experimental optical techniques (laser sources, ultrafast optics, or guided optics), as well as proficiency in a programming language (Python, Matlab, or equivalent), are desirable. A good level of English (both written and oral) is required. Knowledge of French is a plus but not mandatory.
Your Work Environment
The PhD student will be integrated into the 'Complex Photonic Materials and Systems' group at the Institut de Physique de Nice. They will benefit from a multidisciplinary work environment with access to state-of-the-art laboratories in optics, lasers, and instrumentation.
Constraints and risks
The work will involve occasional travel for test campaigns, including at astronomical observation sites. Experimental activities may require working in the laboratory with Class 4 laser equipment, necessitating strict adherence to safety rules (wearing protective glasses, mandatory training). Some development phases may require flexible working hours to accommodate the constraints of astronomical observations or ongoing experiments. No exposure to hazardous chemicals is expected.
