Job Description
Missions
The postdoctoral researcher will design a model liquid metal battery (LMB) cell and characterize its electrochemical properties. LMBs consist of three superimposed liquid layers: a molten salt (electrolyte) sandwiched between two liquid metals (electrodes), all contained within a vessel. These systems are considered a promising solution for large-scale electricity storage.
The aim of the study will be to improve the incorporation of electrochemical effects into numerical and theoretical models describing the flows within LMBs. These flows, driven by magnetohydrodynamic or thermal phenomena, can become unstable and lead to a short circuit of the battery due to direct contact between the electrodes.
Activity
The tasks will include:
• training in the fundamental concepts of electrochemistry,
• conducting a literature review on existing LMB cells and basic electrochemistry,
• designing the LMB to be fabricated based on this literature review,
• initiating and supervising the fabrication of the LMB,
• training in the measurement of electrochemical properties,
• characterizing the fabricated LMB from an electrochemical perspective,
• analyzing the electrochemical effects from a fluid mechanics point of view,
• presenting the results at a national and/or international conference,
• writing an article for an international journal in fluid mechanics.
Your Profil
Skills
The candidate must hold a PhD in physics or engineering sciences. He/she should have an experimental profile and demonstrate a strong curiosity for electrochemistry.
Your Work Environment
The postdoctoral researcher will be part of the Dynamics and Morphology of Complex Flows team within the Turbulence, Atomization, Sprays, and Chaos department at CORIA (UMR 6614 – INSA Rouen Normandie – University of Rouen Normandie – CNRS), which has been studying LMBs numerically and theoretically since 2021.
He/she will work under the supervision of M.-C. Renoult, Associate Professor at INSA Rouen Normandie, within the framework of the LabEx EMC3 HILIMBA+ project, in partnership with CRISMAT (UMR 6508 – ENSICAEN – University of Caen Normandie – CNRS) and LISN (UMR 9015 – University Paris-Saclay – INRIA – Centrale Supélec – CNRS), focusing on the study of LMBs from an electrochemical perspective.
