Missions

The CORIA and CIMAP laboratories are inviting applications for a PhD position under LUMEN project funded by BPI-France, France 2030 and Normandy Region within I-Démo 2024 program. The project gathers experts in fiber laser design, realization and qualification aiming to develop a disruptive laser technology to address realworld applications in health science and quantum technology. The basic concept relies on the exploitation of low phonon rare-earth-doped fluoride glasses. Indeed, recent advances made in the fabrication of high-purity fluoride glass fibers show that this technology is very appealing for the development powerful and efficient laser sources in the visible. Fluoride fiber lasers delivering several watts of power in the green and red wavelengths have been already demonstrated in the laboratory environment [1,2]. LUMEN aims to address the scientific and technological challenges facing the industrialization of this novel technology.

Activities

This postdoc project focuses on the development of monolithic all-fiber laser systems emitting in the visible wavelength range, whose performance meets the requirements of industrial applications. The development of such high-performance fiber laser platforms requires advances in the development of high-reliability fiber components and optimized doped fibers. The first objective of this project is to explore different approaches to develop fluoride fiber components and build optical benches to validate their performances. The second objective will focus on the design, realization and optimization of compact fiber lasers and amplifiers operating in continuous wave regime. Power-scaling and wavelength tunability in the visible will be explored using different rare-earth ions. The realization of all-fiber sources operating in the ultrafast pulsed regime will also be addressed using different mode-locking techniques.

Skills

The applicant should hold a PhD diploma in the fields of photonics or applied physics, with theoretical and experimental skills on optics, laser physics and/or ultrafast/non-linear optics. The research involves design and building fiber components and lasers as well as data collection and analysis within a collaborative project. The candidate should have an affinity for working in multidisciplinary teams involved in this project.

Work Context

CORIA is a Joint Research Unit (UMR) affiliated with the Institute of Engineering and Systems (INSIS) of CNRS, the University of Rouen Normandy, and the Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA) of Rouen Normandy. It is located at the Madrillet technopole, near Rouen. CORIA's research domains encompass both fundamental and applied studies in photonics, turbulence, atomization, and reactive flows. The recruited person will join the Optics and Lasers Department of CORIA.
The position falls within a sector related to the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST), and therefore, in accordance with regulations, your arrival must be authorized by the competent authority of MESR.

The position is located in a sector under the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST), and therefore requires, in accordance with the regulations, that your arrival is authorized by the competent authority of the MESR.

Constraints and risks

As the position involves significant exposure to high-power lasers, the successful candidate will be required to complete laser safety training. In addition, short-term travel within France and abroad is expected.
