Missions
The Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans (LMV) in Clermont-Ferrand, France, is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral researcher specialised in numerical modelling within its experimental petrology group. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Drs. Julien Monteux and M.A. Bouhifd on a project funded by an ERC Advanced Grant, which focused on determining the behavior of carbon (C), hydrogen (H), and nitrogen (N) during the earliest stages of Earth's accretion, magma ocean cooling and the segregation of its core.
Activités
The main activities of the candidate are as follows:
⁃ Development of numerical models to constrain the influence of volatile elements on the Early Earth mantle cooling and solidification,
⁃ Implement rheological laws and melting curves of silicated material accounting for volatile elements contribution in high pressure/temperature contexts,
⁃ Implement melt/solid partition coefficients to monitor the evolution of the volatile elements content during the cooling of the early mantle,
⁃ Participation in collaborations: Actively contribute to project meetings, discussions and exchanges with researchers from the experimental petrology and geochemistry groups.
Compétences
⁃ Candidates must possess a PhD in Earth Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field at the time of application.
⁃ Expertise in numerical and computational techniques in particular in fluids dynamics and thermo-chemical evolution modelling.
⁃ Expertise in monitoring the Early Earth thermo-chemical evolution and implementing state-of-the art petrological and geochemistry constrains in numerical models.
⁃ Good communication in English.
Contexte de travail
Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans is located in Clermont-Ferrand, in central France. This region offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities and has a low cost of living. The laboratory focuses on understanding magmatic processes, examining everything from the structure of the deep mantle to surface volcanic activity. The experimental petrology team consists of about 15 tenured researchers and is equipped with a comprehensive range of experimental devices (e.g. piston-cylinders, multi-anvil presses, and diamond-anvil cells). Additionally, the laboratory features various numerical facilities such a local computing platform with access to COMSOL Multiphysics and Matlab licences. Finally, the laboratory benefits from the access to a computational center (Mesocentre) which provides a shared infrastructure for computing, processing and storing scientific data.
The recruited candidate will work as part of the Experimental Petrology team at the LMV and will benefit from:
- A stimulating work environment in contact with research staff
- Professional support with in-house training
- The possibility of teleworking
- A company restaurant where you can have lunch at an attractive price.
- Partial reimbursement of travel expenses (75%)
+ sustainable mobility package of up to €300/year
- A site accessible by public transport (Tram + bus)
- 44 days vacation / RTT per year
- Financial contribution to health insurance costs
