Missions
Study of magma residence times and ascent rates during the 2018-2021 eruption of Fani Maoré volcano and during older eruptions on the volcanic chain extending from Petite Terre to Fani Maoré volcano (Mayotte Island, Indian Ocean).
Activities
Use the methods of volcanic petrology to reconstruct magma storage conditions, residence times, and magma ascent rates. Determine storage conditions using mineral-based thermobarometry and/or magmatic inclusion studies. Determine residence and reinjection times of magmas using diffusion models in olivine, magnetite and pyroxene crystals. Determine magma ascent rates from crystal and vesicle distributions.
Skills
- Microanalysis by electron microprobe
- Modeling of diffusion processes in minerals
- Knowledge of petrogenetic processes in volcanic domain
- Written (scientific publications) and oral communication
Work Context
The contract is financed for a period of 10 months by ReVoSiMa (Mayotte volcanological and seismological monitoring network) with a possible extension for 12 additional months (pending confirmation of funding). The work will be carried out at the Magmas and Volcanoes Laboratory (LMV) of Clermont-Ferrand (https://lmv.uca.fr/fr/) under the supervision of Etienne Médard and Lucia Gurioli, in collaboration with IPGP researchers involved in ReVoSiMa (Carole Berthod, Jean-Christophe Komorowski...). The candidate will be integrated in the petrology team of the laboratory, and will also be able to participate in the activities of the volcanology team.
