Missions

In the framework of the investigations on the development of nuclear fusion reactors by french agencies (program SUPRAFUSION), the CRISMAT offers a 12 months post- doctoral position. The objective of SUPRAFUSION is to investigate the performances of superconducting coils made with superconducting 2G-tapes. It was recently demonstrated that coils with a moderate size made with these tapes can generate a 20 T field.
The 2G-tapes will be provided by other partners taking part in Work Package 1 (WP1) of the project. CRISMAT will be in charge of their magnetic, structural and micro- structural characterizations in order to establish if and how they are degraded by neutrons irradiation.
In a following stage, the 2G-tapes will be assembled to fabricate conductors for the coils. This task will be performed by other partners working in Work Package 2 (WP2). CRISMAT will be in charge of the magnetic, structural and micro-structural characterizations of the junctions between sections of the conductors before and after neutron irradiation.

Activities

For WP1: perform the structural, micro- structural electrical and magnetic characterizations.
For WP2 : establish from the literature what is the state of the art of making junctions and participate to their characterizations.

The structural and micro-structural characterizations of the 2G-tapes as well as those of the junctions, will be carried out using SEM, TEM, X-rays diffraction and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) micro-analysis.
The electrical measurements will be performed with a Physical Properties Measurement system (PPMS) and the magnetic ones with a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID). In both cases, the measurements will be carried out as functions of the temperature and applied field (14 T for the PPMS and 7 T for the SQUID).
The measurements will be at first performed on nowadays available 2-G tapes and junctions in order to gain the required expertise.
The recruited researcher will also participate to measurements carried out in partners labs, especially measurements at very high applied magnetic field.

Skills

- Hold a PhD degree
- Possess excellent English communication skills, both oral and written
- Autonomy
- Initiative
- Ability to work in collaboration with several teams and to adapt to a collaborative project, which includes partners from academic research and industry. Long stays are foreseen in the laboratories of all three partners.

Work Context

The CRISMAT laboratory, with around 100 members, is a joint CNRS, ENSICAEN and Université de Caen Normandie unit. The contract will be carried out within the Materials and Processes team, under the responsibility of Pr Jacques Noudem and Pr Pierre Bernstein.

The position is located in a sector under the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST), and therefore requires, in accordance with the regulations, that your arrival is authorized by the competent authority of the MESR.

Constraints and risks

This job offer is subject to funding being obtained and applications being reviewed by the Human Resources department.
