Missions

The candidate being recruited will work on precision measurements of neutrino oscillations, one of the main goals of the group working at Subatech on the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment. Three oscillation parameters will be measured at the sub-percent level in the framework of the standard parameterisation of the PMNS matrix (UPMNS), and constraints will be placed on physics beyond the Standard Model by probing its unitarity. The precise knowledge of some of its elements will also facilitate the measurement of a potential CP violating phase by long baseline experiments. The work will include the development of statistical procedures and fitting tools to exploit JUNO's reactor antineutrinos data, as well as the development of classical and deep learning techniques to reconstruct and identify antineutrino events. The latter activity will take place in the framework of the major effort undertaken by the Subatech laboratory for the development of modern analysis and calculus techniques.

Activities

The candidate being recruited will have a major role in the development of statistical procedures and tools applied to JUNO's reactor antineutrinos sample to evaluate the value of oscillation parameters with an unprecedented precision.
- The candidate being recruited will have a major role in the development of tools to reconstruct antineutrino events (interaction vertex and energy) and discriminate them against background events. There, a particular effort will be devoted to the development of both classical and deep learning techniques and to the detailed understanding of their performance and reliability.

Skills

- Applicants must hold a doctorate in experimental particule, nuclear of astro-particle physics ;
- Experience in event reconstruction, data analysis and detector simulation (Geant 4) is an
important criterion. Experience in instrumentation is a plus;
- Mastery of C++ and Root is mandatory; Mastery of python is welcome;
- Skills for team work and scientific communication are mandatory;
- A good knowledge of English (spoken and written) is mandatory.

Work Context

The recruited candidate will be based at Nantes to join the Neutrino group at Subatech laboratory (UMR 6457 of CNRS/in2p3, IMT Atlantique, Nantes Université). It is made of 6 permanent scientists and 2 PhD students, involved in the JUNO and KM3Net experiments and in projects developing and exploiting the LiquidO technology. Earlier participations to the Double Chooz and SoLid experiments contributed to the team's wide expertise. He or she will reinforce the 3 permanent scientists and PhD student presently working on precision oscillation measurements with JUNO. This multi-purpose experiment aims mainly at determining the neutrino mass ordering and at the precise measurement of some parameters of UPMNS. This requires a unprecedented resolution on the reactor antineutrinos energy. Subatech's team already contributed strongly to this via the proposition of the double calorimetric readout that associates two 20-inch and 3-inch PMTs systems, which complementarity ensures the necessary control of calorimetric systematics, and via
its work on the electronics of the 3-inch PMTs. The group is also a contributor to JUNO's program on supernovae neutrinos (analysis, reconstruction and data acquisition). It developed strong French and international collaborations within JUNO for these works, and was moreover a driving force in the international group that was formed by the collaboration to evaluate JUNO's potential for the precision measurement of 4 of the main oscillation parameters. The hired candidate will help making the statistical framework developed at Nantes for that purpose ready for real measurements (data taking should start in late 2023). To exploit the full potential of the double calorimetry, the group also develops reconstruction methods with a particular effort devoted to Deep Learning methods. This comes in harmony with the creation at Subatech of a group specialised in high level reconstruction and calculus techniques.

Constraints and risks

The recruited candidate will be required to travel for short periods in France and abroad and may be for longer periods (a few weeks) in China. No particular risk is to be expected.
