The successful candidate will be member of the XENON Collaboration. He/She will take part to all the activities foreseen by the collaboration: from data taking to data analysis, calibrations and Monte Carlo simulations. He/She will also have the unique chance to work on the more technical aspects of the largest liquid xenon dual phase time projection chamber built so far, being involved in the operations of the ReStoX system at LNGS. Details on his/her implications will be discussed based on the candidate specific competencies and interests.
We expect the candidate to contribute to the following activities:
- data analysis focused on the search for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay (0vbb)
- detector calibration
- participation to the operations on site (at LNGS, in Italy) in particular on the recuperation and storage of xenon system (ReStoX)
- Monte Carlo simulations of the detector response and of the backgrounds
We seek candidates having a Ph.D. in particle physics or who are expecting to graduate before starting the position.
The expected skills are:
- a solid astroparticle physics background
- good computing skills (Python, C++),
- experience on data treatment and analysis
- ability to team working
SUBATECH (Physique subatomique et technologies associées) is a joint research unit (UMR 6457) affiliated to three supervisory bodies: the National Institute of Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics (IN2P3) of the CNRS, IMT Atlantique and the University of Nantes.
The laboratory is located in Nantes, it offers a scientific and dynamic environment with the participation in several local, national or international research programs.
Among these, the experiments of the XENON collaboration with today XENONnT which aims to find the first direct proof of the existence of dark matter in the universe via its diffusion with target nuclei of xenon in a dual phase time projection chamber. The XENON collaboration currently consists of 31 laboratories and brings together more than 170 researchers around the world. In France, the forces involved are grouped together in the XENON@in2p3 Master-Project.
The Xenon team of the SUBATECH laboratory is made up of 6 permanent researchers (3 CNRS, 2 IMT-Atlanthique, 1 University), 1 engineer and 4 doctoral students. The members of the group have recognized expertise in time projection chambers with liquid xenon used for astrophysical research (XENON, DARWIN and nEXO projects) and for medical imaging (XEMIS project). The group designed and is responsible for one of the key elements of XENONnT used to process liquid xenon in most of the crucial phases of the experiment: the storage and recovery system (ReStoX). In addition, its members are strongly committed to the direct research of dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay, within the XENON collaboration.
Constraints and risks
Extended stays at the experimental site might be required.
The successful candidate will receive a support of 5k euros for his/her installation.
Applicants should send a motivation letter, curriculum vitae.
