Job Description

Missions

Development of refractory and ductile high-entropy alloys (HEAs) : formulation via Thermocalc and elaboration by SPS.

SPS (Spark Plasma Sintering) sintering, due to its rapidity, allows the microstructure of the initial powders to be preserved. In this project, SPS technology will be implemented, widely used to produce refractory, dense HEAs with a fine and controlled microstructure. This technique is characterized by a high heating rate through the Joule effect and its great versatility. Indeed, it allows for the designing of a wide variety of materials, and numerous efforts are currently being made to industrialize this process.

Activity

The objective of this postdoctoral fellowship will be to:
- Investigate ductility through a thermodynamic study using the THERMOCALC numerical tool. This involves adding an additional element (Cr, Zr, V, Hf, or Re) to create a five-element high-entropy alloy based on recent literature, with the aim of making this grade ductile in tension.
- Optimize ductility through (i) improved densification by SPS at lower temperatures by allowing, through the addition of a small amount of an additional element (i.e. considered as dopant), a partial transition to the liquid state to wet the AHE grains, and (ii) in-situ deoxidation to trap native oxides present on the surface of the metal powders.
- increase ductility to tungsten by the addition of a face-centered cubic (FCC) AHE phase. This is an exploratory study of a metal composite with a centered cubic (CC) tungsten matrix using a new generation ductile binder based on a high-entropy alloy (i.e., CrCoNi or FeNiCo-type FCC AHE) with high toughness.

Your Profil

Skills

In order to select the best HEA formulations, the aim will be to recruit a candidate capable of using thermodynamic modeling tools (THERMOCALC) and implementing experimental approaches: elaboration of HEAs by SPS, conducting relevant physico-chemical analyses, and also participating in mechanical testing. This recruitment is essential to ensure the continuity of work between the different partners.

Your Work Environment

The postdoctoral contract will begin on August 20, 2026. Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, and at least one letter of recommendation to the CNRS job portal. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
