Research Engineer in Agroecology (M/F)

Job Description

Missions

The work will be carried out within the CRC (Centre de Recherches en Climatologie) team of the Biogeosciences Laboratory (UMR 6282), under the supervision of MC Anstett. This position is open as part of the European partnership ECOFLOURISH (Agroecology Partnership - ECOFLOURISH).
The engineer will work on the implementation and monitoring of agro-ecological measures in a "Living Lab" in blackcurrant orchards. For monitoring purposes, some biodiversity measurements will be automated using AI.
Collaboration and interactions are expected with ECOFLOURISH's European partners, as well as with the partners of the DEPHY EXPE Evol'CASSIS project (Institut Agro Dijon, CA 21) and the involved farmers. Contract extension is possible

Activity

The engineer will be responsible for:
Implementing the ECOFLOURISH protocols, developed in collaboration with researchers and in agreement with farmers. The project will include:
Automated measurements of environmental parameters and biodiversity.
Experimental testing of agroecological measures, such as flower strips, the introduction of beneficial organism populations, or the use of non-toxic biocontrol solutions, to reduce or eliminate the use of synthetic pesticides in blackcurrant cultivation.

Adapting the Insect Detect system (https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0295474) to the project's specific challenges.

Developing and conducting monitoring, observations, and field measurements (manual or automated). Ensuring data management, quality control, and standardization of the collected data.

Analyzing field monitoring data and producing initial synthetic results.

Writing reports for project partners and contributing to their dissemination through scientific publications.

Coordinating the Living Lab (LL), including the operational implementation of field protocols in collaboration with project partners, students, and technical staff.

Facilitating communication with partners and farmers.

Participating in the organization of scientific or technical meetings.

Contributing to socio-economic surveys.

Your Profil

Skills

Requirements for Candidates:
Minimum: Master's degree (M2) and/or an engineering degree in agronomy, with 2–3 years of experience in agroecology and population ecology. A PhD will be highly valued.
In-depth knowledge of data analysis and R programming; proficiency in other programming languages is a plus.
Expertise in sampling and monitoring methods for insects (pollinators, pests, and beneficial organisms) and biodiversity (soil). Ability to identify beneficial organisms. Field ecology research experience required.
Project management skills for research projects.
Fluent French and a valid driver's license (B) are essential.
Skills:
Ability to organize, plan, implement, and coordinate field ecology protocols.
Strong writing skills in both French and English for reports and articles.
Ability to interact with farmers in french
Project management involving multiple stakeholders.
Ability to manage, control, and standardize agro-ecological databases.
Maintenance of social media and website content.
Soft Skills:
Ability to work in a team and coordinate multiple stakeholders.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Autonomy, initiative, responsiveness, and reliability.

Your Work Environment

Regular interactions are expected with the other partners of the Ecoflourish project and the Evol'cassis project. Fieldwork will be conducted in collaboration with Chambre d'Agriculture 21 in the orchards of volunteer farmers. Building and maintaining strong relationships with farmers is particularly important.

€3,143 gross per month or based on experience and the CNRS salary scale.
