Job Description
Missions
Support for the physico-chemical analysis and caracterisation of various fossil specimens as part of a multidisciplinary research project being carried out at the Biogeosciences Laboratory (Dijon) and PPSM (ENS Paris-Saclay), aimed at refining our understanding of the dynamics of marine ecosystems following the Permian–Triassic boundary event.
Activity
Activity 1: Preparation of palaeontological specimens • Identify the most appropriate preparation technique for each fossil specimen • Prepare the fossil specimens to reveal the preserved anatomical structures
Activity 2: Application and refinement of imaging protocols in palaeontology • Implement one or more imaging and caracterisation techniques (photoluminescence, µXRF, µXAS, profilometry) to gain insights into the nature and properties of these fossil specimens • Define and refine combined caracterisation protocols • Prepare and conduct caracterisation experiments • Process, interpret and format experimental data; analyse the results with project members
Activity 3: Monitoring and communication of results • Provide training in the use of the instrument and data analysis • Monitor scientific and technological developments • Disseminate and promote research results both orally and in writing
Your Profil
Skills
o Knowledge: Have a diploma and in-depth knowledge relevant to the activities, ideally a Master degree in materials science o Skills: Be able to carry out experimental and exploratory work; Have knowledge of imaging techniques (e.g. photonics, microscopy); Possess in-depth knowledge of analytical techniques for characterising materials and of computational methods for data processing; Have a good written and spoken English (B1 to B2); Ability to draft reports, procedures and scientific papers in French and English. o Interpersonal skills: Ability to work both independently and within a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment; Ability to communicate with experts in the field; Ability to apply health and safety regulations; Ability to assess the validity and limitations of the caracterisation method used; Ability to report findings; Ability to respect deadlines.
Your Work Environment
The research will be supervised by Arnaud Brayard (Biogeosciences Laboratory [BGS]; CNRS/University of Burgundy, Dijon; https://biogeosciences.u-bourgogne.fr) and by Loïc Bertrand (Laboratory of Supramolecular and Macromolecular Photophysics and Photochemistry [PPSM]; University of Paris-Saclay; ENS Paris-Saclay / CNRS, Gif-sur-Yvette; https://ppsm.ens-paris-saclay.fr). The successful candidate will be based primarily at the PPSM within the ENS Paris-Saclay, where they will join the 'ancient and palaeo-inspired materials' research group, but will also be required to travel to and spend time at BGS, where they will join the Samba team (Structuring of Aquatic Communities and Biomineralisation). The PPSM is a laboratory focusing on molecules and materials that can be stimulated by light or electrons, bringing together expertise ranging from the synthesis of new compounds to the development of innovative instrumentation. The successful candidate will have access to facilities at both PPSM (photoluminescence and Raman platforms, computing equipment, synchrotron expertise, and shared microscopy platforms at Paris-Saclay University) and BGS (GISMO geochemical analysis and imaging platform, preparation rooms and palaeontological collections).
Constraints and risks
Travel and overnight stays between BGS and PPSM are planned.
