Missions:The mission is part of the ANR Actépi project (2019-2023), led by Grégory Combalbert. The Actépi project aims at the critical multimodal edition and the exploitation of some twenty collections of French episcopal acta of the 11th-13th century. In this project, CRAHAM is responsible for editing the acta of the Norman bishops. The recruited study engineer will therefore contribute to the editing of part of these collections, using digital tools designed by the Pôle du Document Numérique (MRSH, Caen) along with G. Combalbert. He may also participate in their historical exploitation.

Activities: The recruited study engineer will primarily ensure the XML-TEI encoding of certain parts of the Norman episcopal collections, using the e-Cartae tool. Depending on the collections, it may be necessary to search for acta in archive repositories, to check the references and the transcription in order to build or perfect the critical edition. He will largely participate in the indexing of the acta by carrying out the necessary identifications, by creating the places and people files for this operation in the Thesauri of the Pôle du Document Numérique and by encoding the link between the acta in TEI and these Thesauri. The study engineer will publish a few brief papers (commented sources or reflections) on Actepi's blog (on Hypotheses.org).

Expected skills: Holder of a master's degree minimum. Very good knowledge of medieval history and medieval diplomatics. Fluency in Latin. Archival research experience desired. Mastery of the methods and issues of critical editing of ancient texts, in particular charters. Proficiency in XML-TEI language and encoding. Mastery of the challenges of research in digital humanities and in particular in digital publishing.

Work Context

Work context: The recruited study engineer will work at the Center Michel de Boüard-CRAHAM (UMR 6273 Unicaen / CNRS), on campus 1 of the University of Caen Normandie. It will benefit from a (shared) office, computer equipment and an internet connection. He will be fully integrated among the researchers taking part in the Actépi project and as such will participate in the workshops and conferences to be organized. It will therefore work alongside the members of the project from the five partner teams: CRAHAM (Caen), ARCHE (Strasbourg), POLEN (Orléans), CRULH (Nancy) and Tempora (Rennes). In Caen, the IGE recruited will work with and under the responsibility of Grégory Combalbert (MCF, project leader) and in close collaboration with the Digital Document Center of the MRSH.
